When was the SEC Founded?

Ten of the original schools have remained in the conference since its inception, with Sewanee (1940), Georgia Tech (1964), and Tulane (1968) leaving over the years. The SEC was the first conference to legalize athletic scholarships, which it did in 1935.
The SEC had no formal headquarters for its first eight years before Martin Conner was named the conference’s first president in 1940 and established a corporate headquarters in Jackson, Mississippi. It moved to Birmingham, Alabama, in 1948.
SEC Jumped to 16 Teams in 2024

These programs left the Big 12 after competing in the conference since 1996. The expansion came 12 years after two other Big 12 teams left the conference for the SEC. In 2012, Missouri and Texas A&M made the leap to the Southeastern Conference to give the league 14 teams.
Texas saw its football team reach the championship game in its first season in the league (2024). The Longhorns lost to Georgia 22-19 in OT. Despite the loss, the Longhorns received a spot in the College Football Playoff, where they won two games before losing to Ohio State in the semifinals.
History of Expansion in the Southeastern Conference
Take a look at the SEC history since the league was formed in 1932. After Sewanee, Georgia Tech, and Tulane left, the league stayed with 10 teams from 1966 to 1991. From 1991 to 2012, it had 12 teams thanks to the additions of Arkansas and South Carolina.
Adding these teams split the conference into divisions for the first time. Since the 2024-25 athletic year, the league has had 16 teams. Also, the league removed its divisions in baseball and football. In football, the top two teams in the league compete in the conference title game, while baseball has a conference tournament.
