Roberto De Zerbi explodes at referee and sent off in bizarre moment as Marseille beat PSG ...Middle East

Sport by : (talksport) -

Roberto De Zerbi received two yellow cards within seconds to spark a chaotic conclusion in Marseille’s win over Paris Saint-Germain.

Nayef Aguerd’s goal in the fifth minute for Marseille proved to be the difference between the two sides at the Stade Velodrome.

De Zerbi’s row with the referee saw him get two yellow cards in quick succession

It marked Marseille’s first league win over PSG since September 2020 and just their second since November 2011.

But it almost came unstuck in the dying minutes after De Zerbi was left apoplectic over what he believed was a blatant foul.

Why was De Zerbi so frustrated?

In the 90th minute, Marseille looked to break down the left flank via Robinio Vaz, only to be bundled over by PSG defender Achraf Hakimi.

However, referee Jerome Brisard only signalled for a throw-in rather than a foul.

It was a decision that prompted an extraordinary reaction from De Zerbi on the touchline.

After witnessing Vaz get sent to the ground, De Zerbi had his arms outstretched in frustration and momentarily stepped onto the pitch as he berated Brisard over his decision.

De Zerbi’s initial anger prompted Brisard to march over and brandish a yellow card.

But the Italian wasn’t done with his verbal tirade and gave Brisard a piece of his mind once more.

Whatever De Zerbi said evidently overstepped the mark as Brisard couldn’t reach into his pocket quickly enough to pull out a second yellow.

Hakimi, who was in close proximity to De Zerbi, even attempted to calm the Marseille boss down but to little avail.

Having been forced from the field, De Zerbi watched the final five minutes of the contest from just behind the Marseille bench.

But he was front and centre of the celebrations once Brisard blew the full time whistle as the Italian sprinted onto the field and jumped around in delight having earned Marseille their first win over PSG at home in 14 years.

How did De Zerbi react to Marseille’s win?

The win over PSG was Marseille’s third of the season from five matches played, but it meant far more to De Zerbi.

“I told (Marseille president) Pablo Longoria that one of the seasons I wanted to come here was to beat PSG, because they are stronger,” De Zerbi told Ligue 1+.

“They represent power and I don’t like power. So I was looking forward to this evening.

“But it doesn’t change anything, we only won one match and took three points.”

De Zerbi added in his press conference: “It’s one of the best days since I arrived in Marseille.

“Beating PSG was a dream because PSG has no rival. It’s just one victory, three more points.

“I didn’t give the players any days off because the most important match is on Friday in Strasbourg. We don’t necessarily have to win it, but we’ve taken another step towards our goal of becoming a great team.”

Why was Le Classique played on Monday?

With the clash against Strasbourg just days away, De Zerbi’s troops do not have much time to recover.

Initially Marseille had an extra day to rejuvenate given the clash against PSG was scheduled for Sunday.

However, the match was pushed back a day due to ‘severe weather conditions’ in Marseille, with the city hit by torrential rain.
