Sadly, we have another obituary to add to the Blackhawks’ Centennial season.
Glenn Hall, one of the greatest goaltenders in the history of the NHL, has died. He was 94.
Hall appeared in 618 games for the Blackhawks, starting 613 times. He ranks second in Blackhawks history behind only Tony Esposito in appearances, starts, wins (276 — Esposito won 418) and shutouts (51 — Esposito had 74).
Hall was selected to the NHL First All-Star Team seven times, and earned the recognition with three teams (Detroit, Chicago and St. Louis). He won the Vezina Trophy in 1963, and shared it 1967 and 1969.
In 1961, Hall was between the pipes when the Blackhawks won the third Stanley Cup championship in franchise history.
But of all the remarkable numbers he put up, Hall owns one of the most unbreakable — and shockingly impressive — records in NHL history. Hall started — and finished — 502 consecutive games. He did not miss a game from the beginning of the 1955-56 season with Detroit through 12 games of the 1962-63 season in Chicago. And he appeared in 50 straight playoff games during his streak as well.
The shockingly impressive part: he did it without a goalie mask.
Hall was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1975. And, in 2017, Hall was named one of the 100 greatest players in NHL history.
