HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS BEARS!?
The Dallas Cowboys were hoping to win this game and give Defensive Coordinator Matt Eberflus a game ball after emerging from their battle with the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field with a victory. Instead, the Ben Johnson-coached Bears scored 31 points as quarterback Caleb Williams played his best game of the year. So much for that game ball, folks.
FINAL: Bears 31, Cowboys 14 (ESPN Box Score)
Thoughts on the Bears Week 3 win
We’re going to spill so much virtual ink on what Caleb Williams did at quarterback on Sunday throughout the week. But it wouldn’t have happened without the best performance of the year by Chicago’s offensive line, which allowed zero sacks and just one quarterback hit. The offensive line kept Caleb clean. As a result, he delivered his best performance of the year with this line: 19/28 (67.9%), 298 yards, 4 TD, 0 INT, and a 142.6 passer rating. That passer rating number is a career-best for Chicago’s QB1. More of that, please!CHICAGO BEARS WEEK 3 INSTANT PLAYER GRADES
The only Big D performing on the Soldier Field turf on Sunday belonged to the home team. Dennis Allen’s bunch forced four turnovers and came up with a pair of sacks of quarterback Dak Prescott to go along with seven quarterback hits. It is a sizable improvement from the Week 2 showing that this defense put up. And after throwing more INTs (2) than TDs on Sunday, I don’t think Dak is in line to win the NFC’s Offensive Player of the Week award. Mandatory Credit: Matt Marton-Imagn Images I’ll think long and hard about writing a Tyrique Stevenson standalone post for his performance in Week 3. His takeaway started the rally on Sunday. It prevented a Dallas scoring drive and was immediately followed by a Chicago touchdown strike. Stevenson tacked on two solo tackles and a pair of pass breakups. I felt Matt Eberflus used Stevenson as a scapegoat last year, so it was nice to see the third-year cornerback make a big play against his former coach’s new team. We can exhale now. This team won’t go 0-17 this year. Phew.Week 3 highlights

Montez Sweat — GM Ryan Poles traded for Montez Sweat in 2023, then gave him a whopper of an extension with the idea that he would be a difference-maker on the Matt Eberflus defense. That hasn’t fully come to fruition just yet, but Sweat did come up with a big game on Sunday against the Cowboys. Sweat collected two solo tackles, a sack, two quarterback hits, and one tackle-for-loss. If I had a genie who could grant me three wishes, I’d consider using one on asking for Sweat to repeat this performance every week for the duration of his time with the Bears.
Colston Loveland — The rookie tight end was targeted three times, with one of those being a 31-yard reception. But his playing time was limited with a hip injury. At first, Colston Loveland was listed as questionable to return. Unfortunately, he was downgraded to doubtful. We’ll monitor this situation for updates.
Darnell Wright — It has been a tough go for Darnell Wright. He was flagged for some more penalties in this one. Wright’s penalty issues won’t fully sour me on the overall game. It just serves as a reminder that everyone still has stuff to work on moving forward.
WHAT’S NEXT: Week 4 vs. the Las Vegas Raiders, 3:25 p.m. CT on Sept. 28 at Allegiant Stadium on CBS.
Next up for the Bears is a showdown out west in Las Vegas against the Raiders, who are 1-2 after losing to the Washington Commanders by a 41-24 score. Chicago’s football team could make it three consecutive losses for Las Vegas, which opened the season with a 20-13 win against the New England Patriots. The Bears going into the Week 5 bye with a 2-2 record would be a wonderful development. But there is so much hard work that needs to be put in before they get to that point. I hope they are up for the challenge.
