Caleb Williams Speaks: Facing Matt Eberflus, Footwork Improvements, More ...Middle East

Ben Johnson and the Bears’ return to Detroit last week didn’t go as planned.

Here’s hoping Caleb Williams’ reunion with former head coach Matt Eberflus, who will call Dallas’ defense on the opposite sideline on Sunday, goes much better for the Bears.

Williams was asked about his thoughts on his time working under Matt Eberflus now that he’s nine months removed from the short-lived marriage, and the second-year quarterback said a lot by saying very little.

“I think we’re at the point where we’re past that,” Williams said. “It was good being able to become a Chicago Bear, and he made that decision … happy to be here. Our time together wasn’t wasted. Obviously, we didn’t win as much as we wanted, but we’re past that, and we’re trying to focus on being 1-0 this week.”

When asked about preparing to face his former head coach, Williams compared this week’s matchup with Eberflus and the Cowboys to any other week.

“It’s the same as preparing each week for me,” Williams said. “You gotta go out there and execute the plays that Ben calls. I’ve played a bunch of ball against that kind of defense. Obviously, Matt [Eberflus] was my coach last year, so just being able to move past all of that and being able to go out there and help the Chicago Bears be 1-0 this week.”

Eberflus and Williams know each other well, which could set up quite the chess match on Sunday at Soldier Field. However, Williams stayed the course in his commentary on the obvious storyline, saying that every week in the NFL is a chess match.

“I think every game is a chess match. Being able to adjust, and adjust again, and adjust again—that’s what football constantly comes down to; through all four quarters, being able to adjust and figure out what they’re doing.”

Caleb Williams feels like he’s been working hard to continue to develop despite a 0-2 start for Chicago

Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson said this week that he feels like Williams made progress between the Bears’ first two games, and I agreed with his assessment after watching the film from the Detroit game. When asked what specifically he’s focusing on in his week-to-week development, Williams pointed to his footwork as one of his top priorities.

“Just being able to get comfortable with my footwork, that [was] my focus from Week 1 to Week 2, and I think why some of those passes from Week 1 to Week 2 looked a little different,” Williams said. “I mean, [footwork] is up there with the top list of things to be able to be accurate, and that’s huge for me.

“From there, I think I have all the talent in the world to be able to deliver a good ball to my guys and let them go and make plays for us as an offense.”

By cleaning up his footwork, Williams delivered a strike under pressure after rolling left, planting his feet, and waiting for Rome Odunze to clear a defender before hitting Odunze for their second touchdown connection of the game, instead of trying to rush for the touchdown.

“That’s always a part of keepers is being able to make the defenders decide,” Williams said. “Always make sure you try and get out fast and get ahead so when those moments happen, the defender has to make a decision and at the end of the day you just make them wrong.”

While Odunze has been Williams’s clear preferred target through two games, Williams and Johnson know they need to get Cole Kmet and Colston Loveland involved in the offense. Johnson took the blame for their lack of involvement thus far, but Williams said that’s on him, too.

“There was just a few situations that come to mind that, even in those long down and distances that we had in that game—we had a couple second-and-super-longs—so being able to get them the ball as fast as possible, let them catch, tuck, knife and get maybe 12 [yards] maybe more if they bounce off a few tackles—that’s a part of playing quarterback, that’s a part of the game. Like Ben said, it’s him, but it’s also on me when I’m out there on the field.”

Regarding the connection between Williams and his tight ends, he feels it’s just a matter of getting on the same page with them.

“I feel that way; I believe they feel that way,” Williams said. “I know in the first game I missed one to Colston across the middle. But over time — OTAs, training camp, and now — our connection has grown. We’re on the same page and have the same idea of where they should be and where they will be.”
