A few Chicago Cubs injury updates for your off-day updating …

Per Bruce Levine, Jameson Taillon’s rehab start will be for the Iowa Cubs on Sunday. We knew one was coming this weekend, but we didn’t yet know where. Taillon has been out just under a month, so his return to game action is pretty much typical for a mild hamstring strain. Typically, you’d think he would need more than one rehab outing, but if the Cubs wanted to get any innings from him before the All-Star break, there wouldn’t be time for two rehab starts. We’ll see if the Cubs bring him back a little early for a shorter start (how good does he feel and how desperate are they?), or if they keep him out through the All-Star break.

Meanwhile, Edward Cabrera’s hamstring/adductor strain will also have him out well past the All-Star break, but the hope is that he could maybe start throwing before the break. If that happens and goes smoothly, a return in August would be very plausible.

Daniel Palencia is making progress in getting back from his mild flexor strain, and is throwing this week. Hopefully that goes well, and he can start to ramp back up for a return after the All-Star break. Craig Counsell has indicated it won’t be any sooner than that in any case.

Ideally, Palencia will be fully past this thing for the stretch run, and can be in peak form when it matters most – September and October.

Phil Maton tells the Tribune that he’s annoyed by his knee injury, but he knows the Cubs are doing the right thing by holding him out to try to get fully past it.

“It’s one of those things where you try to kind of convince yourself every day, like, it’s 100%, yeah it feels good, but it’s just this kind of managing thing where it’s pulling away from my ability to pitch at the level that I know I’m capable of,” Maton told the Tribune. “And it’s one of those things where thankfully we’ve got staff here keeping me in line, like, ‘No, we need to address this and get this fixed.’ Because they have a ton of faith in my ability to pitch big innings for us later in the year. If we never address it, never get it fixed, never get my delivery where it needs to be, I’m not doing anything good …. I do know I’m very close with my delivery, and I think this will be a good chance to finally get ahead of everything and be where we need to be.”

It’s been a slog for Maton with the Cubs, but until and unless he gets the knee and his mechanics right at the same time, it’s pretty hard to evaluate how much he could contribute late in the year in the most important innings.

Per The Athletic, there’s still hope that Shelby Miller – signed in the offseason to a two-year deal as he rehabbed from 2025 Tommy John surgery – could contribute late in the year. If he’s fully healthy and good to go, that could be quite a boost. Miller has been intermittently dominant as a reliever in his second MLB life, so to speak.

Speaking of guys who COULD be a factor for the big league team in the second half – but on whom you cannot count for sure – Jaxon Wiggins is expected to make one more rehab start at South Bend before returning to Triple-A Iowa (The Athletic). Wiggins has been coming back from elbow inflammation, and although he still has a lot of development work ahead of him if he’s going to stay a starting pitcher, it’s not hard to imagine the Cubs deciding he can contribute this year out of the big league bullpen. It’s one of those things where the stars have to align just right for it to make sense, but it’s at least plausible, and wouldn’t necessarily change anything about his long-term future role.
