The Bears Defense Helped Another Quarterback Win Player of the Week ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The Chicago Bears’ defense has been bad in the season’s early weeks. In the last five quarters, it’s been downright awful. On Sunday, Dennis Allen’s unit allowed 8.8 yards per play to Detroit, a team record they proudly boasted about on social media this week.

Save for a three-and-out with the backups in the game during garbage time, the Lions actually averaged 9.2 yards per play. Sunday’s drubbing in Detroit was also the first time since 2014 that Chicago allowed 50 points in a game to an opponent.

With the dust settled on Detroit’s offensive clinic on Sunday, Lions quarterback Jared Goff was named the NFC’s Offensive Player of the Week for his part in the beatdown.

Jared Goff Named NFC Offensive Player of the Week After Bears Beatdown

Goff completed 23 of 28 passes (82.1 percent) for 334 yards and tied a career-high with five touchdown passes for a 156.0 passer rating, leading the Lions to an NFL-high 52 points in their Week 2 victory over Chicago.

His five touchdown passes and 156.0 passer rating led the league in Week 2. Goff has five career starts in which his team scored at least 50 points, tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning (five) for the fourth-most such starts by a quarterback since 1950, trailing only Tom Brady (eight starts), Drew Brees (six), and Pro Football Hall of Famer Len Dawson (six).

Goff joins Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy as the second quarterback to win the NFC Offensive Player of the Week honor in as many weeks. With Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys coming to Soldier Field this weekend fresh off a 40-point performance against the New York Giants, we could realistically be crowning another Bears opposing quarterback the NFC Offensive Player of the Week next Wednesday.

For what it’s worth, Prescott has completed 67 percent of his passes for 832 yards, four touchdowns, one interception, and a 101.8 passer rating in three starts against the Bears.

As we’ve said for months upon months, Chicago’s pass rush is a significant problem, and not for opposing quarterbacks.

On Sunday, Chicago finished with zero sacks and four quarterback hits against Jared Goff and the Lions. However, Montez Sweat did have a sack nullified by an illegal contact penalty on cornerback Tyrique Stevenson.

If Chicago’s defensive front can’t figure out how to generate more pressure—and injuries continue to mount in the secondary—we will see a few more quarterbacks get their shine after playing the Bears.
