It sounds like our time obsessing over a Khalil Mack trade back to the Chicago Bears is coming to an end.
NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter dropped a rumor notebook on the final Saturday before the 2026 NFL Trade Deadline, which is worth your time to read if you want to catch up on what’s happening on the rumor mill. But if you’re a Bears fan — specifically, one who was hoping the Bears could swing a trade for Mack — you’re probably not gonna love this update.
From Schefty and Rap Sheet:
Despite their 0-7 record, the Los Angeles Chargers continue to tell teams that they have no interest in trading away Khalil Mack, and the veteran pass rusher will not be going anywhere before Tuesday’s deadline, according to sources.
“I want Khalil Mack here,” Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters. “Khalil Mack wants to be here.”
The Chargers have prioritized keeping Mack for the leadership he provides and the talent he brings, characterizing him as a pillar of the organization. They might be winless, but they are not acting that way in any trade discussions with other teams regarding any of their players.
The Chargers also don’t like the message of giving up on the season. Calls from rival general managers on Justin Herbert, Ladd McConkey and others have received hard nos.
On the one hand, I understand not trading a quarterback like Herbert or a wide receiver like McConkey. Those are the types of players who are young, still in the prime of their careers, and can envision building around next year once this putrid 2026 for the Chargers comes to an end. But on the other hand, not listening to offers for a 35-year-old veteran defensive end who is on an expiring contract and whose future might not be with the 2027 Chargers doesn’t line up in my mind. If the Bears were operating this way, I’d call it organizational malpractice.

The reporting from Rapoport and Schefter comes days after ESPN’s Mina Kimes shared what she had heard about the Chargers standing pat.
“I have been told the Chargers are not trading anyone. What the hell are you doing? What are you doing? What world are you living in where you’re turning down trade offers? This version of the team is over. I’m not talking about Justin Herbert. I’m saying, like, you’ve gotta start thinking about 2027. This is absurd if that’s true.”

— David Thompson (@DJakaDT) November 5, 2026There is a part of me that hates that a Khalil Mack trade is likely not happening. Mack isn’t the same player he was when the Bears traded for him in 2018. But he is still a solid defensive lineman who can still make splash plays as a pass rusher and set the edge as a run defender. Plus, I wanted Chicago to bring in a vet who can lead by example and maybe give some of the team’s younger defensive linemen some hands-on help. This wasn’t just a nostalgia play for me. But that part woudl’ve been cool, too.
A Mack trade made so much sense for both sides. It’s a shame that — unless the Chargers are pushing a public narrative that they’re not sellers so they can play hardball in negotiations — it won’t happen.

But there is also part of me that is glad that we’re getting clarity on the Mack situation now. If the Chargers truly aren’t doing a bit for the sake of jerking teams around, then Chicago’s front office can pivot to other needs. Maybe it is another defensive end or a cornerback. What about a left tackle?
I’ve been kicking around names that make sense for the Bears since the loss to the Packers really opened up my eyes about this team’s shortcomings on defense. Don’t get me wrong. Trading for Jeffery Simmons is a big deal that moves the needle. Heck, I’d argue that Simmons’ arrival makes guys better around him in a way that’s almost like making a trade acquisition. Still, it would be nice to have another trade acquisition to boost morale and the profile of the defense.
