Komatsu insists Ocon sacking was purely a professional call ...Middle East

Esteban Ocon's sudden disappearance from Haas' driver line-up in Mexico City was one of the most startling developments of the weekend.

Now, with the Frenchman's departure confirmed as permanent, team principal Ayao Komatsu has offered his first extended explanation of the decision – without coming particularly close to revealing what actually happened.

The Japanese engineer insists that removing Ocon was a strictly professional judgement, taken in the interests of the team. Yet the circumstances surrounding the decision remain shrouded in secrecy, leaving a conspicuous gap between Haas' official position and the unanswered questions circulating around the paddock.

Ocon was unexpectedly replaced by reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa during last weekend's Mexico City Grand Prix, with little public explanation from the American outfit.

Speculation quickly gathered pace, including reports of an alleged physical confrontation between Ocon and Komatsu on Friday, something the Frenchman subsequently denied on social media.

Haas has since confirmed that the 30-year-old will not return to its cockpit, bringing his association with the team to an abrupt and decidedly uncomfortable conclusion.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 in Sao Paulo, Komatsu acknowledged that the outcome was far removed from what he had envisaged when recruiting Ocon.

"I can’t go into any details but that’s of course not how we planned it," Komatsu said. "This was not what I expected when I signed him for last year’s drive.

"It’s a lot of sadness but I honestly felt that was the only decision I could make, professionally, as a team principal of this team. Totally professional decision, nothing else,” he said.

The insistence that the move was purely business-related is central to Komatsu's defence, but it does little to illuminate the incident that triggered such an extraordinary intervention. And the team boss appears determined to keep that particular chapter firmly closed.

A team principal standing by his judgement

On Thursday in Brazil, Komatsu returned to the responsibility that comes with running a Formula 1 operation, arguing that his overriding obligation was to protect Haas' interests rather than allow personal considerations to influence his judgement.

"At the end of the day I am the team principal and every decision I make is 'what do I need to do for the best interest of this team?’,” he explained.

"In that sense it gives me clarity, I had clarity of what I needed to do. I have to make a decision purely based on professionalism.

"Every time I go back to that. Of course it is not easy but at least I am comfortable in myself…

"I can't go into any details but this is F1, every day is a new challenge. I take any new challenge as an opportunity to learn and do the right thing.

"Not to say the situation that happened in Mexico is something I look for. But again I've got a responsibility, so I have to stay 100% professional and a make a decision for the best of the team.”

There is little ambiguity in Komatsu's conviction that he acted correctly, although his repeated refusal to discuss the underlying circumstances means the most important part of the story remains untold.

Ocon's departure leaves a bitter aftertaste

Komatsu also acknowledged the human impact of the decision, revealing that the reaction within Haas was one of considerable surprise when he informed the workforce that Ocon would no longer be driving.

The Frenchman had spent almost two seasons with the team, making his abrupt removal all the more difficult for those who had worked alongside him.

"It is almost two years working with Esteban, it has taught me a lot,” he acknowledged.

"On Saturday morning when I had to tell the boys and girls here that Esteban is not driving any more, everyone was surprised but I could not go into any details.

"Normally I would want to be as transparent as possible but on this one I cannot. I said 'all I ask is give Ryo everything.' But again it's just brilliant, they got on with it.

"The team deserved that point and they are in good spirits. Everybody is just focused, I don't know if the atmosphere has changed but the team is in a good place."

Indeed, Hirakawa stepped into the vacancy in Mexico and secured a point, while Rafael Camara has now been handed an unexpected opportunity to make his Formula 1 debut at his home Brazilian Grand Prix, having originally been scheduled to join Ollie Bearman for 2027.

For Ocon, meanwhile, the situation is considerably less straightforward. His departure could mark the end of his F1 career, while the nature of his exit leaves an uncomfortable question hanging over his final months with Haas.

And until Haas is willing to lift the veil on what happened in Mexico, the mystery surrounding one of the season's most extraordinary driver exits is unlikely to disappear.
