Joe Burrow is injured again.
No matter what personnel changes they make to the offensive line, the Cincinnati Bengals just cannot seem to provide much protection to their star quarterback.
Burrow has been ruled out for three months after sustaining a turf toe injury in Week 2GettyAs a result, there is some concern beginning to form about what this may mean for the 28-year-old’s NFL career, with his injury timeline drawing eerily similar comparisons to that of former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, who retired at the age of 29.
The Bengals currently sit atop the AFC North as the only team in the division to be 2-0, but Burrow sustained a left toe injury in the second quarter in a wild 31-27 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, thanks to an epic 241-yard and two touchdown performance from backup quarterback Jake Browning.
Unfortunately, Burrow was seen leaving the locker room of the Paycor Stadium in a boot and on crutches and it has since been confirmed that one of the the league’s highest-paid signal-callers requires surgery on his turf toe.
This injury – which San Francisco 49ers $265 million quarterback Brock Purdy also suffered in Week 1 – is set to keep Burrow sidelined for a minimum of three months.
Burrow’s numbers draw an alarming comparison to Luck
After a startling stat graphic was released by ESPN on their Monday Night Football coverage comparing the careers of Burrow and Luck, though, fans are now fearing the worst.
In his short six-year career, Luck had racked up 828 quarterback contacts for a contact percentage of 21 percent. Burrow, who is now in his sixth season in the NFL, has already had 634 contacts at a 20 percent contact percentage.
Luck had a pressure percentage of 28 percent, comparable to Burrow’s 27 percent, while the Bengals star has already been sacked 201 times to Luck’s 174 sacks taken when with the Colts.
Fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice their concerns, with one fan posting: “Andrew Luck retired early because he was constantly getting injured behind the Colt’s O-Line. In his first 71 games he was sacked 157 times. Joe Burrow has been sacked ??? times in the same amount of games. How much longer can he take that abuse?”
“This is literally malpractice by the Bengals…” another fan wrote. “I know they have “tried things” but when you have a generational talent this is not enough This is not nearly enough.”
“That’s actually crazy. He’s also playing in a much more rugged division than Luck did. Ravens, Browns, Steelers? Bro,” a third wrote.
A side by side comparison of Joe Burrow and Andrew Luck’s career paints a worrying picture for Bengals fansX/ @SharpFootball Former Colts QB Luck retired at the age of 29 due to lingering injuriesGetty Images - Getty“He’s taken so many hits and injuries that it might be too late, even if they fix the line this offseason he probably still gonna be injury prone,” a fourth user commented.
This particular user’s sentiment echoed that of ex-NFL quarterback turned analyst Dan Orlovsky’s, who wholly believes that the 2020 No. 1 overall pick’s career is trending in a similar way to Luck’s, and that NFL teams all around the league will be learning from this.
“It should impact all of the NFL, because it feels like Joe Burrow is trending toward becoming this generation’s Andrew Luck in a way,” Orlovsky said on Monday.
“The conversation around Andrew was all the hits. And through those first five or six seasons .. look at them. Look how much they’re getting hit in relation to how often they’re dropping back, how many sacks they’re taking, and then the percent of pressure that they’re dealing under…”
“If I’m a team in the NFL, I’m paying attention to it and going ‘I am learning from that because I don’t want my young player or young quarterback to have that similar experience.'”
Rushing numbers speak volumes
In his six-year career spanning from 2012-2018, Luck had a 53-33 record, throwing for a whopping 23,671 yards at a 60.3 percent pass completion rate, for 171 touchdowns to just 83 interceptions.
Luck was in his prime when he retired, which has many questioning what could have been for his NFL careerGetty Burrow has taken over 200 sacks through his first six seasons in the NFL and fans hope he doesn’t follow the path of LuckGettySo far in his career which is five seasons and a game young, 28-year-old Burrow has thrown 19,190 yards at a pass completion percentage of 68.5 percent, an all-time career record of those who have completed 1,000 or more career passes according to Pro Football Reference.
‘Joey Brr’ has also tallied 142 touchdowns and just 46 interceptions, for an interception percentage of just 1.8 percent. He has a 40-30-1 record with the Bengals, and even led them to a Super Bowl appearance in 2021.
The biggest difference between the two quarterbacks lies in the rushing numbers, where Luck rushed for 1,590 career yards from 332 attempts for 14 touchdowns, while Burrow has so far rushed 227 times for 809 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Therefore, it could be theorized that the 2018 NFL Comeback Player of the Year inevitably took more hits and direct contact from defenders as a result of this, with his retirement coming due to a lingering shoulder injury, which was also partly attributed to a snowboarding incident he suffered in 2016.
Nonetheless, Burrow’s sack numbers are alarming, and upon his hopeful return later on this season, the Bengals should look to find alternative ways to offer pass protection to their quarterback.
Should all things go well recovery-wise, it is estimated that ‘Joe Shiesty’ could return against either the Buffalo Bills on December 7, or the Baltimore Ravens on December 14.
Until then, Who Dey has to roll with Browning under center, unless they swing a trade for a new quarterback, of course.
