CUBS LINEUP — Tonight begins the first game on the last road trip of the regular season. The Cubs will play three against the Pirates starting tonight, followed by four in Cincinnati this weekend, before wrapping up their season in Chicago against the Mets and Cardinals. Fortunately, Cubs baseball won’t end there, but we’ll take this all one step at a time.
Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for the first of three games against the Pirates at PNC Park.

Michael Busch, 1B Nico Hoerner, 2B Ian Happ, LF Moises Ballesteros, DH Carson Kelly, C Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Dansby Swanson, SS Willi Castro, RF Matt Shaw, 3BNo big changes to the (interim) Cubs lineup, as Craig Counsell navigates life without Seiya Suzuki, Kyle Tucker, and Owen Caissie.
That means the rebounding Michael Busch is up top, the scorching hot Nico Hoerner is batting in the all-important second slot, and the stat-recovered Ian Happ hits third. I love that Hoerner has found his way there. It’s certainly due to the various absences, but it’s also been legitimately earned as he keeps spraying the ball all over the field. Such a stud this season. Seriously.
Moises Ballesteros, who had a great weekend, is batting cleanup and Carson Kelly is behind the plate.
Meanwhile, as Pete Crow-Armstrong continues to struggle, his stay lower in the Cubs batting order continues.

Chicago Cubs: Jameson Taillon, RHP
Jameson Taillon has already made one start since coming off the Injured List (the second time), but it was a pretty short one against the Braves: 4.1 IP, 6H, 2ER, 2BB, 2K. I’ve mentioned this a bunch already (and it’ll be a theme the rest of the season, so prepare yourself): I really don’t care how he does today. I’m mostly just hopeful he looks healthy and effective, as the postseason approaches.
Taillon probably wouldn’t get one of the first three starts in a Wild Card series, but he would absolutely be involved in a five or seven-game series, so the Cubs definitely need him to get back to being himself. His presence is a potentially huge swing for the Cubs playoff odds this year, and he needs to build himself back up after multiple trips to the IL.
Setting that aside, Taillon faced his former team, the Pirates, back in mid-June, holding them to 2ER on four hits and two walks against seven strikeouts in 6.1 IP.
Pittsburgh Pirates: Braxton Ashcraft, RHP
The Cubs have faced Ashcraft twice so far this season, once as a reliever (he threw 2 perfect innings) and once as a starter (5.0 IP, 3H, 1ER, 0BB, 4K). Indeed, he’s swung between the bullpen and the rotation all year long, throwing out of the pen his last time out, but starting five games in a row before that.
All of which is to say I have no idea what we (or the Pirates) expect to get out of him tonight at PNC. For what it’s worth, his splits aren’t huge, but lefties have hit him a little bit better than righties, as you might expect.
