Molly Caudery could barely conceal her devastation after being forced to withdraw from the World Athletics Championships.
What made the British pole vaulter’s unanticipated exit all the more heartbreaking was the fact it was due to an injury suffered in her warm-up.

Speaking on the BBC, British paralympian Stef Reid was heartbroken for the Cornwall native.
“It is just a freak accident,” Reid said.
“She has done nothing wrong. To see it end like that, in tears, that is not how she wanted to come away from Tokyo.
“She was coming here looking to have a redo of Paris. When it comes to athletics, these opportunities don’t come around a lot.
“The pole vault mats are meant to be soft, she must have caught her ankle at a terrible angle.
“It’s devastating.”

As for Caudery, who failed to qualify for the pole vault final at the Paris Olympics having missed her opening height three times, she summed up the devastation in two words.
“Heartbroken… again,” Caudery wrote.
“Out before I even started, rolled my ankle during warm up. Waiting for an official diagnosis but a huge thank you for all the support as always.”
Caudery, who was the 2024 world indoor champion, added the injury spelt the end of her 2025 season.
The Brit had already enjoyed a strong year having taken out the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold crown and finished fourth at the World Athletics Indoor Championships.
Caudery also tasted success at the Doha Diamond League as she won the event with a 4.75m jump.
