That was an incredible football game. After the pick-six to start, the Niners scored twice, and the Bears subsequently went three-and-out on back-to-back drives. Suddenly, the 7-0 lead was a 14-7 deficit, and the Bears were on the ropes. All they did was bounce back, go punch for punch with a Super Bowl contender until the final snap, and nearly pull out the best win of their season.
This team has no quit in them; they believe they can play with anyone. And they’re not the only ones who believe that anymore, thanks to performances like this one, even though they came up just short in the end.
Bears Instant Grades
Offense
QB Caleb Williams | A-
He was so, so good. Had they won, it would have been the best game of his career. Heck, it might still have been the best game of his career. There were a few missed throws, but overall, you really can’t do anything but applaud his effort tonight. Caleb needed to be perfect for the Bears to win this one, and he was oh so close to being that.
He’s going to wish he had the incompletion to Duvernay over the middle back. And if he made it with all that pressure in his face, it would have been an incredible throw, but still, it’s one he’s going to want to have back.
RB Kyle Monangai & D’Andre Swift | B
I thought they ran the ball well, and both factored into the pass game, too. D’Andre Swift found the endzone twice. They continue to be a running back tandem you can win with come playoff time.

He wasn’t really a factor in this one.
WR Luther Burden III | A-
Soon enough, it feels like he’ll jump Rome Odunze as WR1. He just always seems to get open, make the catch, and make plays with the ball in his hands. Having said that, he had a huge drop on a key third down on the final drive. I really, really hope he’s ok.
TE Cole Kmet | B
He didn’t factor a ton receiving the ball, but he was very effective in the run game.
TE Colston Loveland | A-
Just an outstanding night for Loveland. He’s a reliable threat in short-yardage situations, especially on third and fourth, and he’s also a playmaker down the field. He did a bit of everything in this one. He also had a drop late on the final drive that hurt, but he made up for it later in the drive on fourth down.
Offensive Line | C+
I thought overall they played fine, but it felt like too many of their mistakes were really big ones that resulted in negative plays. It also felt like there were a lot of batted balls tonight, which can partially be on Caleb, but that’s on the offensive line as well.
Defense
Defensive Line | D-
The only thing that saved them from an F was Austin Booker making a few plays. Other than that, despite Trent Williams getting hurt right off the jump, they got very little pass rush and were zero threat in the run game.
Linebackers | D-
T.J. Edwards had the pick-six off the bat, but other than that, this group did very little tonight.
Mandatory Credit: Sergio Estrada-Imagn ImagesSecondary | D-
Jaylon Johnson made a great play to force that first interception, and Jaquan Brisker had a nice PBU early, but other than that, the secondary really didn’t make life on Brock Purdy difficult in this one.
Special Teams
K Cairo Santos | A
He made all of his kicks and did everything he was asked.
P Tory Taylor | B-
He wasn’t used a whole lot tonight. Had one really nice punt to pin the Niners inside the 10, but missed an opportunity before that to do the same.
Bears Coaching
Ben Johnson | A-
Ben Johnson and the Bears’ offense had to be pretty much perfect for the Bears to win, and they were close, but they came up just short. I thought there were a few instances he could he tried to commit to the run a bit more, but that was an unbelievably called football game. They just came up a tad short against the hottest offense in football in their house. Sometimes you just have to tip your cap.
Dennis Allen | D-
It’s hard to do much when your pass rush just can’t get home, but it also didn’t seem like there were a ton of adjustments made defensively. Don’t get me wrong, Kyle Shanahan is one of the top offensive minds in football, but Allen’s defense just can’t be that bad if they want to win in the playoffs.
