Lenny Ibarra provides the power as Los Alamitos football routs St. Paul ...Middle East

LOS ALAMITOS – Los Alamitos head coach Ray Fenton has only one problem with running back Lenny Ibarra: How to get him a rest once in a while.

Ibarra totaled 243 yards of total offense, scored three touchdowns and nearly had a fourth score in the Griffins’ 48-14 victory over St. Paul on Friday.

“Tonight you got to see a kid who plays with all the grit and determination of the kids who go to West Point,” Fenton said of Ibarra, who will be at the U.S. Military Academy next fall. ”Our biggest thing with him is trying to get him some rest.”

Ibarra started with a 56-yard touchdown run less than two minutes into the game. He scored on runs of 15 and 8 yards in the second quarter, and had 144 yards rushing in the first half asl the Griffins (5-0) took a 34-7 lead into the locker room.

In between Ibarra’s scores, Colin Creason hit Ashton Gogue with an11-yard scoring pass and Kamden Tillis scored on an 8-yard run.

Ibarra also starts at safety and returned an interception 40 yards to set up Tillis’ score.

That was the first of five turnovers from Los Alamitos’ defense. The Griffins also recovered four fumbles.

In the third quarter, the snap went through the legs of St. Paul quarterback Gabriel Castaneda and into the end zone, where defensive end Jackson Renger fell on the ball for a touchdown.

“Any time you turn the ball over, the first turnover you’re down to a 66 percent chance of winning the game,” Fenton said. “On the second turnover you’re down to a 33 percent chance. So here you are driving late in the half and you’re trying to make it 27-14, then we get a big turnover down there and go into score and make it 34-7.”

A fumble recovery set up Ibarra’s 8-yard score with 23 seconds left the first half.

“That is way different than 27-14, and that was really the turning point in the game,” Fenton said.

St. Paul got to within 14-7 when Creason found Jordan Lauago for a 10-yard scoring pass on the fourth play of the second quarter.

“They had a good game plan and they were starting to move the ball on us, but all 11 players on defense adjusted really well,” Fenton said.

He was expecting a battle: St. Paul is winless but its three games were against Division 1 or 2 playoff teams from last year, with another looming on the schedule.

“We saw they were 0-3, but that is not an 0-3 football team,” Fenton said. “We knew we were going to have our hands full. The score wasn’t really reflective of how hard they played.”
