WATCH: Ben Johnson Has a Short Fuse (And I Love It!) ...Middle East

If you were looking for a head coach who understood what accountability meant, looked, and sounded like, then Ben Johnson is your guy.

The first-year Bears head coach didn’t have an easy one in Week 1. And he won’t have a walk in the park when his team travels to Detroit to face a Lions club that is also coming off a season-opening loss to an NFC North rival. With that in mind, you’d think that Ben Johnson would have all eyes on Detroit. For what it’s worth, it sure sounds like Johnson’s primary focus is on how he will handle his return to the home of the Lions, where he was the offensive coordinator for the last three seasons.

But first, an answer to a question (h/t Brendan Sugrue on Twitter/X) about the Week 1 loss that shows more accountability in a 34-second clip than Matt Eberflus showed in nearly three years as the Bears head coach:

A transcription of the exchange between Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson and a reporter:

Reporter: “I want to ask about the end-of-game kick-off one more time.”

Ben Johnson: “Can we go on to the next game? We’re still on…”

Reporter: “With the new rules, when it doesn’t land in the landing zone it’s a dead ball. So, theoretically, could you just kick it anywhere short and the clock would’ve stopped? Was that considered at all?”

Ben Johnson: “Yeah, it was. Listen. The last time I’m going to bring up the last game. OK? I got greedy, and I wanted the extra five yards. That’s why we tried to kick it out of the back of the end zone. It’s as simple as that.”

I’ve mentioned it privately to friends, so I suppose this is a good time to mention it for public consumption, but Ben Johnson has a bit of Bill Belichick in him with how he answers football questions. It is sharp and concise. There are no wasted words. There is no talking around a subject. It is matter-of-fact to an extent where it almost feels uncomfortable. But I dig it. This is the kind of energy the Bears need from their head coach. And after three years of mealy-mouthed Matt Eberflus press conferences, this is a refreshing change. Now, go win some games!
