Hey, that’s a series win in Atlanta for the Cubs! This one looked a lot harder on paper back in March, but it’s still a great series win today.
Through three innings, Chris Sale had struck out a whopping eight Cubs. It was not the most auspicious of starts for an offense that relishes inauspicious starts (and middles and finishes). So the fact that they were able to break through for a few runs, kicked off by Carson Kelly’s dinger, was actually a pleasant surprise.
A few insurance runs from there would’ve been nice, so the final four innings might not have been so tense. But, hey, the bullpen made it work!
Good to see Jameson Taillon back out there, though he’ll probably have better nights. Craig Counsell gets a gold star for pulling Taillon a little early and rolling the dice with the bullpen covering 4.2 innings. Hey, maybe Counsell should be the Ankin Law “Making It Personal” Player of the Game for this one?
In all seriousness, I really like the way the bullpen was deployed, with Taylor Rogers and Porter Hodge getting bridge work, and then an updated back-end trio of Caleb Thielbar, Brad Keller, and Andrew Kittredge being used in an order to optimize match-ups rather than just, for example, holding Keller for the 9th.
