NBA Rule Change: More Buzzer-Beating Heaves Coming to a Court Near You! ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The NBA is giving the people what they want.

ESPN’s Shams Charania shared a change to the league rules on Wednesday morning. The NBA will reportedly score unsuccessful end-of-quarter heaves as missed team field goals during the 2025-26 season, as opposed to missed field goals for individual players. As minor as this adjustment may sound, it likely will lead to a pretty noticeable difference in the coming months.

Many players have shied away from the buzzer-beating heave for years. It’s become common practice for players to strategically wait until the moment the buzzer sounds to toss up the shot in an effort to avoid damaging their field goal percentage. This has led to some frustration from fans, and I think it’s safe to say that frustration finally made its way to Commissioner Adam Silver.

NBA Encouraging More Buzzer-Beater Attempts

The NBA’s rule change is expected to lead to plenty more deep shots, which could certainly impact how teams go about last-second possessions. Could we see slightly more drawn-up action to get off an open look, specifically if the ball is being inbounded? Relatedly, will defenses put that much more pressure on a shooter at the end of each period?

If one thing is for sure, players have only become better and better at sinking these long-range buckets over the years. And now those players have even more of a reason to take them!

Also, yes, we can all agree it’s silly that the NBA even had to make this rule change in the first place. Players should never have cared more about their box scores than the chance to get their team some extra points. Indeed, that’s why some players have garnered a little more respect for their willingness to let it fly in recent years, including Nikola Jokic, Anthony Edwards, and even the Chicago Bulls’ Coby White!

Drew Stevens of The Bigs noted that White finished tied for fifth last season with eight heaves.

Nonetheless, the NBA is constantly looking for ways to make the game more appealing and more competitive. This rule change – while minor – should certainly help in that department.
