Daniel Jones brought back down to earth after historic Dolphins blowout where Anthony Richardson ‘could have scored 33’ ...Middle East

Daniel Jones’ regular season debut for the Indianapolis Colts was nothing short of remarkable.

In seven drives, ‘Danny Dimes’ marched the Colts offense down the field for a score seven times.

Yes, every single time the offense took the field, they scored.

According to CBS Sports research, the Colts became the first team since at least the turn of the millennium in 2000 to score on every possession in both the regular season and postseason.

According to Scott Hanson on NFL RedZone, this is the first time a quarterback has done this since 1991, meaning that all-time greats like Tom Brady and former Colts Super Bowl winner Peyton Manning have never achieved what Jones did.

Not only did the Colts make history, they also broke their long-standing curse of not having won in Week 1, which has stood since 2013.

In a crushing 33-8 victory over the lifeless Miami Dolphins and a hugely disgruntled Tyreek Hill, Jones racked up 272 passing yards and a touchdown after completing 22-for-29 of his passes.

The 28-year-old added an additional two scores on goal-line sneaks, which saw him become the first Colts quarterback to record two rushing touchdowns in a season opener.

Insider claims Anthony Richardson could have put up 33 points vs Dolphins

Despite a historic night, ESPN’s Ben Solak has brought Jones back down to earth, stating that the formerly ousted New York Giants quarterback proved nothing as a result of the Dolphins’ secondary being so poor.

“It’s difficult to overstate how badly the Dolphins’ secondary played Sunday,” he wote. “That’s the story of the Colts-Dolphins game: a woefully undermanned secondary running into a deep pass-catching corps with a strong schemer at head coach.”

The longtime NFL analyst then dissected the ways in which Colts head coach Shane Steichen protected Jones by utilizing the quick passing game because of the quarterback’s success rate dropping from 65 percent when the defense opted for the four-man rush, to 56 percent when they blitzed (16 times).

“I cannot generate any meaningful takeaways about the starting quarterback, good or bad,” Solak continued.

“Jones had a classic point guard game. He threw well to his first read when open, including a beautiful deep out-breaker to Adonai Mitchell with anticipation, but didn’t do much damage through his progressions. He was fine as a scrambler, as always.”

Then came the dagger blow – the glass-shattering hot take. Solak claimed that if it was Colts backup Anthony Richardson running the offense, then he would have run the show, as well as third-string quarterback, Riley Leonard.

“Jones avoided negative plays — no picks, one sack — which was and will remain his primary emphasis as he keeps the starting job from Anthony Richardson Sr,” Solak concludes.

“If there’s a victory lap to be taken in the Jones-Colts marriage, it’ll come down the road. This was certainly a good day at the office, but I’m confident Richardson also could have scored 33 points against the Dolphins’ defense on Sunday. (And QB3 Riley Leonard would have gotten a solid 27 points himself.)”

Since entering the league as the fourth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Richardson has been plagued by injuries.

As such, he has played just 15 games across two seasons, in which he has thrown 2,391 yards for 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, completing 50.6 percent of his pass attempts.

Next up for the Colts in Week 2 is their home opener where they will host Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos at Lucas Oil Stadium, with the Broncos’ defense expected to be a much tougher test for Jones to navigate.
