Late on Monday Democrats in Congress released an image of a birthday note allegedly written by Trump to Jeffrey Epstein, which depicts the silhouette of a woman’s body and concludes with the line: “Happy Birthday – and may every day be another wonderful secret”.
The contents of the letter were first reported back in July by the Wall Street Journal, an article which the US president previously condemned as a “fake” before filing a lawsuit against the publication.
But crucially, his lawsuit referred to that birthday letter as “non-existent”.

In response, White House aides have said the signature at the bottom of the letter cannot be Donald Trump’s.
Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said it was “very clear President Trump did not draw this picture, and he did not sign it. This is FAKE NEWS to perpetuate the Democrat Epstein Hoax!”
He has already angered some of his own base after appearing to U-turn on his promise to release the files, calling the conspiracy around Epstein a “hoax” and those clamouring for the publication of them “weaklings”.
However Epstein’s victims and some members of Congress are unsatisfied, with House Democrats saying on X: “What is he hiding? Release the files!”
The Wall Street Journal also ran its own analysis of his signature, showing other times the president has signed his name in such a fashion.
Regardless, the release of the drawing will only add to mounting pressure on his administration to force more disclosure in the case of Epstein and his former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell.
Shortly afterwards Congress’s House Oversight Committee released the first tranche of files – some 33,000 pages, but nearly all of it was already in the public domain, or rendered useless due to heavy redactions.
Now more information could be released this week – with the key question being how much more damaging information might be contained.
The image – and Trump’s previous comments – are also likely to fuel conspiracy theories that there is a much wider cover-up.
