It was just three months ago that Donald Trump ordered an investigation into the use of Joe Biden’s signature, but now the president’s own autograph has become a major point of contention.
Late on Monday Democrats in Congress released an image of a birthday note allegedly written by Trump to Jeffrey Epstein, which depicts the silhouette of a woman’s body and concludes with the line: “Happy Birthday – and may every day be another wonderful secret”.
At the bottom of the lewd message, “Donald” is scrawled in such a way to depict pubic hair, albeit with a long trail from the final “d”.
The contents of the letter were first reported back in July by the Wall Street Journal, an article which the US president previously condemned as a “fake” before filing a lawsuit against the publication.
In his defence at the time, Trump said he was “not a drawing person. I don’t do drawings of women, that I can tell you.”
But crucially, his lawsuit referred to that birthday letter as “non-existent”.
An extract of the letter and drawing apparently made for Epstein by TrumpThe image released by the Democrats on the House Oversight Committee will be harder for Trump and the White House to play down, given it came from the Epstein estate.
“The oversight committee has secured the infamous ‘Birthday Book’ that contains a note from President Trump that he has said does not exist,” Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the panel, said.
“It’s time for the president to tell us the truth about what he knew and release all the Epstein files.”
In response, White House aides have said the signature at the bottom of the letter cannot be Donald Trump’s.
White House deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich posted several other images of Trump’s sign-off on X, writing: “Time for @newscorp to open that checkbook, it’s not his signature. DEFAMATION!”
Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said it was “very clear President Trump did not draw this picture, and he did not sign it. This is FAKE NEWS to perpetuate the Democrat Epstein Hoax!”
Trump himself has remained silent on the issue since Monday, instead using his TruthSocial account to post about the justice system and sporting events.
He has already angered some of his own base after appearing to U-turn on his promise to release the files, calling the conspiracy around Epstein a “hoax” and those clamouring for the publication of them “weaklings”.
A number of Republicans were swift to back him on Monday, with Byron Donalds of Florida saying he had “seen Donald Trump sign a million things” and Tim Burchett adding that he had “never known Trump to be much of an artist either”.
However Epstein’s victims and some members of Congress are unsatisfied, with House Democrats saying on X: “What is he hiding? Release the files!”
The president’s estranged niece, Mary Trump, insisted that it was ” definitely his signature,” in a post on X, adding: “Just saying.”
The Wall Street Journal also ran its own analysis of his signature, showing other times the president has signed his name in such a fashion.
Other have also shared images of his signature bearing only his first name when signing documents, often in more personal messages.
Regardless, the release of the drawing will only add to mounting pressure on his administration to force more disclosure in the case of Epstein and his former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell.
Last week dozens of Epstein’s victims urged Congress to pass the Epstein Files Transparency Act to release all documents related to the paedophile.
Shortly afterwards Congress’s House Oversight Committee released the first tranche of files – some 33,000 pages, but nearly all of it was already in the public domain, or rendered useless due to heavy redactions.
Trump’s critics and Epstein campaigners have used the latest development to add fresh impetus to their calls for the files to be released in full, saying “survivors deserve justice, and the American people deserve the truth.”
Now more information could be released this week – with the key question being how much more damaging information might be contained.
Already, Republicans who control the Oversight Committee have released hundreds of pages of documents turned over by Epstein’s lawyers, including the full “birthday book,” Epstein’s will and his 2007 non-prosecution agreement with prosecutors in Florida.
The image – and Trump’s previous comments – are also likely to fuel conspiracy theories that there is a much wider cover-up.
With a lawsuit in the works, there is the potential for Trump to face awkward questions under oath.
But even if that case prematurely unravels, the noise around it is only going to grow louder.
