September marks the San Diego Blood Bank’s 75th anniversary, marking “decades of innovation and impact in patient care,” the organization announced Monday.
Since its founding in 1950, the blood bank “has collected more than 5.5 million pints of blood from volunteer blood donors and currently impacts as many as 150,000 patient lives each year,” it said.
SDBB has “grown from a small community effort into a leading nonprofit blood services organization serving hospitals throughout Southern California,” officials added.
Douglas Morton, the San Diego Blood Bank’s chief executive officer, said that every pint donated “is a story of compassion.”
“For 75 years, San Diego Blood Bank has been here for our community, because our community has always been here for us,” Morton said. “As we look ahead, we’re investing in innovation and access so that every patient who needs blood can receive it – today, tomorrow, and for the next 75 years.”
According to the blood bank, patients on a daily basis in the San Diego region “depend on blood transfusions for trauma, cancer treatment, surgeries, childbirth and more.”
“There is no substitute for blood, and volunteer donations of all blood types are needed regularly to maintain a stable supply,” officials said.
Officials said that the blood bank has grown “into a key regional and national resource for life-saving blood donations, plasma collection and medical advancements.”
The organization participates in and “has led cutting-edge research initiatives such as cell therapy and regenerative medicine, Precision Blood medical research and cord blood banking,” Blood Bank officials said.
“These programs are possible thanks to blood donors, funders and community collaborators who are all champions of health and wellness,” they added.
