America has lost patience with Trump – the booing proves it ...Middle East

He was born there 79 years ago at Jamaica Hospital in the borough of Queens, would for decades use it as the backdrop for his playboy lifestyle and made it the setting for the reality show The Apprentice that led millions to believe he was actually a razor-sharp businessman.

When Trump accepted an invitation to attend the men’s final of the US Open on Sunday, he might have assumed not everyone in the crowd was a fan. And he was left in no doubt after many in the 24,000 seater stadium booed him several times as he appeared in the presidential box with a 10-strong entourage that included son-in-law Jared Kushner.

It’s possible some booing the president were doing so because his decision to attend the event for the first time since 2015, when he also received a less-than rapturous reception, created a major challenge for Trump’s Secret Service team that resulted in delays of two hours for the public.

Largely, however, the president would have heard the boos, even if people watching on television did not, given organisers had asked broadcasters to mute “distractions” resulting from his attendance.

President Donald Trump was greeted with cheers and boos at the US Open final, with many seats empty and the match delayed by security checks. Originally set for 2 pm ET, the start was delayed 30 minutes. Trump’s approval rating was 40% in late July and mid-August, the lowest of his presidency. #DonaldTrump #USOpen #Tennis

The message, first reported by the Bounces substack, added: “We ask all broadcasters to refrain from showcasing any disruptions or reactions in response to the President’s attendance in any capacity, including ENG [Electronic News Gathering] coverage.”

In another detail that delighted Trump watchers, the corporate box that hosted the president was paid for by Rolex, the Swiss luxury watch maker  headquartered in  Geneva. Recently, Trump announced a jolting 39 per cent tariff on goods from Switzerland.

A recent NBC News poll found 43 per cent of Americans approved, with 57 per cent disapproving. The numbers were similar to those he had in June. Those numbers are historically among the lowest for US presidents, though several – inducing Joe Biden – had worse.

While Trump campaigned on a vow to deport millions of undocumented migrants, his decision to send in the National Guard and troops to cities such as Los Angeles and Washington DC to support a migrant round-up has been far more controversial.

“We’re going to make a decision as to where we go in the next day or two,” he said.

A number of commentators suggested the president did not appear especially interested in the game between Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz over Jannik Sinner, of Italy battling for a silver trophy that was sitting to his left.

When he spoke to reporters later, however, he claimed he “loved it”.

And in what might have been an attempt by Trump to control the narrative of what had happened when his face appeared on the so-called jumbotron video screens and many booed, he claimed the reception he received was warm.

Did Trump really believe that?

Who knows. The reality is the US president long ago reached a point of making such declarations, irrespective of awkward facts that might get in the way.
