America has lost patience with Trump – the booing proves it

Donald Trump has a complicated relationship with New York City.

He was born there 79 years ago at Jamaica Hospital in the borough of Queens, would for decades use it as the backdrop for his playboy lifestyle and made it the setting for the reality show The Apprentice that led millions to believe he was actually a razor-sharp businessman.

After Trump became president, the former Democrat found many residents turned against him. In 2019 Trump decided he’d had enough and moved his primary residence to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

When Trump accepted an invitation to attend the men’s final of the US Open on Sunday, he might have assumed not everyone in the crowd was a fan. And he was left in no doubt after many in the 24,000 seater stadium booed him several times as he appeared in the presidential box with a 10-strong entourage that included son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Also with him were Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the man tasked with trying to defend the president’s tariffs, and Attorney General Pam Bondi, the official with oversight of raids on undocumented migrants, and the debacle over the administration’s failure to release the Epstein files.

It’s possible some booing the president were doing so because his decision to attend the event for the first time since 2015, when he also received a less-than rapturous reception, created a major challenge for Trump’s Secret Service team that resulted in delays of two hours for the public.

It’s true that Trump did receive some cheers from those in the crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, located in Flushing Meadows, a neighbourhood of Queens, and he would later chat with supporters.

Largely, however, the president would have heard the boos, even if people watching on television did not, given organisers had asked broadcasters to mute “distractions” resulting from his attendance.

President Donald Trump was greeted with cheers and boos at the US Open final, with many seats empty and the match delayed by security checks. Originally set for 2 pm ET, the start was delayed 30 minutes. Trump’s approval rating was 40% in late July and mid-August, the lowest of his presidency. #DonaldTrump #USOpen #Tennis

“With respect to Broadcast Coverage, the President will be shown on the World Feed and the Ashe Court Feed during the opening anthem ceremony,” said an email from the US Tennis Association to broadcasters.

The message, first reported by the Bounces substack, added: “We ask all broadcasters to refrain from showcasing any disruptions or reactions in response to the President’s attendance in any capacity, including ENG [Electronic News Gathering] coverage.”

Despite what some termed an act of censorship, reports suggested Trump would have heard the booing several times.

In another detail that delighted Trump watchers, the corporate box that hosted the president was paid for by Rolex, the Swiss luxury watch maker  headquartered in  Geneva. Recently, Trump announced a jolting 39 per cent tariff on goods from Switzerland.

Trump’s visit to New York came as the president continues to face a poor approval rating over his handling of everything from the economy, to immigration and trade.

A recent NBC News poll found 43 per cent of Americans approved, with 57 per cent disapproving. The numbers were similar to those he had in June. Those numbers are historically among the lowest for US presidents, though several – inducing Joe Biden – had worse.

(Before Democrats get too smug, they ought to bear in mind the party has the lowest positive rating for decades, sitting at just 24 per cent.)

While Trump campaigned on a vow to deport millions of undocumented migrants, his decision to send in the National Guard and troops to cities such as Los Angeles and Washington DC to support a migrant round-up has been far more controversial.

In recent weeks, Trump has been threatening to go to war with the city of Chicago, another Democratic Party stronghold overseen by an African American mayor. There has been loud push back, and over the weekend Trump suggested his plans were not set in stone.

“We’re going to make a decision as to where we go in the next day or two,” he said.

And what about the tennis Trump watched at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre dressed in his trademark dark suit and long red tie?

A number of commentators suggested the president did not appear especially interested in the game between Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz over Jannik Sinner, of Italy battling for a silver trophy that was sitting to his left.

When Alcaraz won, Trump got to his feet but the look on his face did not emit joy.

When he spoke to reporters later, however, he claimed he “loved it”.

“The two players have unbelievable talent,” he said. “It seemed that they hit the ball harder than I’ve ever seen before.”

And in what might have been an attempt by Trump to control the narrative of what had happened when his face appeared on the so-called jumbotron video screens and many booed, he claimed the reception he received was warm.

“The fans were really nice. I didn’t know what to expect. Usually you would say that would be a somewhat progressive crowd. Some people would call it liberal,” he said. “But they were great. The fans were great.”

    Did Trump really believe that?

Who knows. The reality is the US president long ago reached a point of making such declarations, irrespective of awkward facts that might get in the way.
