Divisional Goose is Cooked, Wild Card Race, Injured Outfielders, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

Da Bears. Tonight. Do it. Time to turn the corner.

I still fall solidly into the camp where I think the Cubs are essentially locked into the playoffs, and the only question is whether they can claim the top Wild Card spot, and the home games that come with it in the Wild Card round. I wasn’t ever quite able to get back into hoping on the divisional race, and, now that the Cubs are 7.5 games out with under 20 games remaining, that goose is fully cooked. So then, the last two days were mighty bad for the Cubs in that Wild Card race. They lost two extremely winnable games, at home, against a very bad team. And concurrent with those two losses, the Padres won a couple. Thus, the lead in that top Wild Card spot is back down to 3.0 games. The Padres now get to host the Reds for a series while the Cubs go to Atlanta to play the Braves, and they’ll do it potentially without their closer, and without two of their three starting outfielders. We’ll see what we see on the Daniel Palencia update today or tomorrow, but I’m generally pretty nervous when it’s a pitcher’s shoulder, especially when it looks like it did, and especially when it’s this close to the end of the season. As for Pete Crow-Armstrong, we’ll also just see what we see when he shows up to the park today in Atlanta. With Kyle Tucker, though, we already know he’s unlikely to be starting. Again:

Craig Counsell doesn't think Kyle Tucker will be in the Cubs' lineup Monday in Atlanta. They will see how PCA feels before tomorrow's game. pic.twitter.com/8mbcFWscqI

And the Cubs making the wrong guess on whether a guy can come back before wasting too many days not just making a dang IL move. You could argue that it hasn’t hurt them too badly this time since they have an extra player on the bench in September, and it isn’t like playing shorthanded has cost them a game in any specific way to which you could point. But with PCA also missing some time? Can you really play with TWO outfielders on your bench who are unavailable to enter the game? © Benny Sieu-Imagn Images We know that Owen Caissie was brought to Chicago just in case there was a roster move that needed to be made, and Moises Ballesteros’s Instagram indicates he is in Atlanta. So the Cubs are lining up multiple options if they have to make this move or that. Risky move, to say the least:

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) September 8, 2025 Trea Turner has a hamstring strain, the extent of which won’t be known until after an MRI. The potential impact to the postseason there is obvious. Of COURSE Jason Kelce is a Nisei guy when he’s in Chicago. Love it:
