I can’t stop thinking about how the Joe Thuney trade is the linchpin of the Chicago Bears’ offseason.
When it comes to the new-look Bears, it all starts in the trenches. The offensive line has three new starters. Two of those newbies have Pro Bowls on their résumés. And one of those players is Joe Thuney. A two-time first-team All-Pro with a handful of Super Bowl rings from his time blocking for Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes while with the New England Patriots and Kansas City, respectively, Thuney is the headline acquisition for Chicago’s refurbished offensive line. But when it comes to Thuney’s contributions, what he brings to the table starts well before he hits the playing field.

What I liked about my time reading the piece is that it goes beyond mentioning the offensive lineman’s accolades and accomplishments, as it paints a picture of what the Bears are getting in their new offensive lineman. My favorite anecdote from the story was this quote from tight end Cole Kmet, who peels back the curtain and provides a peek into how Joe Thuney has set an example upon his arrival to Chicago:
“Seeing him up close and watching him work, no doubt in my mind, I think he’s a Hall of Fame guard. It’s so spectacular to watch. He’s just so precise on everything he does with his technique, his finish, just everything you’d want in an offensive guard. That’s what everyone should aspire to be on the football field in their own regard.”
There are some other quotes from teammates, such as defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Sr. and rookie offensive lineman Ozzy Trapilo, as well as position coach Dan Roushar, that go a long way toward explaining why Joe Thuney was a priority add for this front office at the outset of the NFL’s transactional period. Again, this is a good read for Bears fans who want a better idea of what makes it click in the trenches. After all, we have been waiting for this franchise to add a player like this for a while. Better late than never, right?

It has been even longer since the squad has had an All-Pro on the offensive line. Center Olin Kreutz was a first-team All-Pro center for the Bears in 2006. The team hasn’t had an All-Pro guard since Stan Jones in 1959. Given the franchise’s struggle to unearth and develop offensive lineman talent, it is truly refreshing to see Joe Thuney on the Bears. I imagine quarterback Caleb Williams feels similarly, especially after being sacked 68 times as a rookie.
Leadership and accountability are two words the old regime used often, but didn’t have actions to back it up. So in addition to hiring Ben Johnson as a head coach to change the vibes up top, the 2025 Bears needed to add a player whose leadership by example could rub off on his teammates. With that in mind, it makes sense why Chicago’s front office swung a trade with the Chiefs to acquire Thuney before the start of the new league year.
The Bears and Vikings kick off their regular season in six days on Monday Night Football. Both teams will feature improved offensive lines going into the season. But Joe Thuney might be the best of the bunch. Even when you consider the cost of the trade and Thuney’s extension, it still feels like Chicago’s football team got the better end of the deal.
