MEDIUM Art Center in Ukiah moves downtown with new space, the same mission ...Middle East

News by : (Ukiah Daily Journal) -

After two previous moves, MEDIUM Art Center is making its third and, it hopes, final relocation.

Its new home at 110 S. School St., between Three Sisters and the Mendocino Book Company, marks a big step in its evolution from a pop-up gallery to a true community art center. Third time’s the charm.

MEDIUM Art Center, formerly known as Deep Valley Arts Collective, is opening the doors to its new downtown location during Ukiah’s First Friday Art Walk on Sept. 5 from 5 to 8 p.m.

The night will feature the launch of Mixtape, a group exhibition where artists respond visually to their favorite song lyrics. The show blends visual art and music, with work inspired by everything from classic ballads to obscure deep cuts. It’s a celebration of personal soundtracks and shared stories – fitting for a space built on expression and inclusion. The opening reception will have music by DJ FR:XN and a community interactive mixtape-themed art project.

The nonprofit launched in 2021 with a space in the Pear Tree Center and a mission to make art accessible. It operated with no paid staff, optional commissions, and no submission fees. It started small, but grew fast. MEDIUM added youth showcases, monthly open mics, collage workshops, and inclusive public projects.

It provided a space to make art for people recovering from addiction, and created platforms for emerging and overlooked artists. Since opening, MEDIUM has welcomed a wide range of artists and held many exhibitions reflecting the region’s creativity.

In 2022, the Arts Council of Mendocino County named the group Arts Champion of the Year.

In 2024, the organization took a major leap forward by hiring its first executive director and expanding public hours to five days a week. These changes set the stage for the next phase: becoming a full community art center.

In the summer of 2025, MEDIUM secured additional funding to grow its mission even further. Earlier this year, the nonprofit rebranded as MEDIUM Art Center to better reflect its focus on public programming and arts education.

“We built this space for the entire community,” said Executive Director Lillian Rubie. “It’s a place for everyone to come together and be creative. We’re here to make that possible.”

With its new location, MEDIUM aims to establish a destination for the arts in downtown Ukiah and to reach a broader audience, particularly those who haven’t always felt represented in local arts spaces. The organization offers free monthly exhibitions, regular workshops and classes, live music, and handmade gifts.
