Having retired from T20I cricket after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 and Test cricket in May 2025, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are entering a fascinating chapter in their cricketing journeys. Now, they are fully focused only on the ODI cricket.
A Dainik Jagran journalist, Abhishek Tripathi, has made a bold revelation about their future. He claimed that both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are unlikely to be part of India’s plans for the ICC World Cup 2027. Age will be a key factor in their future.
By the time of the ICC World Cup 2027, Rohit will be 41 and Kohli 39, and at this age, maintaining fitness and form will be their biggest challenge.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's last series confirmed for October
However, the journalist claimed that the BCCI sources have told him that the upcoming Australia tour will be Kohli and Rohit’s last series. They won’t get another chance with the ODI series in Australia being set as the farewell series for two of India’s modern-era greats.

He also revealed that Rohit and Virat faced similar situations regarding their Test careers before the England tour. The top authorities had clearly told the seasoned batters that they would no longer be considered for the Test team, and they retired, and now the same thing happened for the ODIs.

Rajeev Shukla dismisses talk of farewell series for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli
But the BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla dismissed the rumors when he was asked about a special farewell series for Rohit and Kohli, similar to what Sachin Tendulkar got in 2013.
Rajeev Shukla said on the podcast on the sidelines of the UPT20, “When did they retire? Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will both play one-dayers. So, if they are playing, why are you worried about a farewell series? Yes, they have retired from two formats in phases, but they are playing in ODIs, right? No need to overthink about it.”
