Preseason Positivity, Dolphins Keep Complaining, What to Watch For vs. Chiefs, and Other Bears Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

It’s a Friday, we’ve finally made it. It is also a Chicago Bears game day. What a treat for us!

The final Bears preseason game kicks off TONIGHT. I look forward to writing about games of consequence in September. In the meantime, an exhibition matchup against the defending AFC champs awaits this evening. P.S. We’re just 17 days away from kickoff on Monday Night Football. Jobs on the 53-man roster can be won (and lost) on any given night in which a preseason NFL game is taking place, and tonight is no exception. Players who are on the roster bubble are on the list of things to watch for in tonight’s game. (Tribune) Does anyone want to win the starting left tackle job? I’m asking for a friend. Over at The Athletic, Jon Greenberg asks why the Bears’ left tackle situation is still a question. That’s a fair ask. This left tackle issue has been lingering for months. It’s a shame that the Ozzy Trapilo thing isn’t working out at the position. I still like the pick, but I’m wondering if the team would rather have someone with more collegiate experience competitng at the left tackle position with Braxton Jones. Who wants to play running back in a system that produced a 1,000+ yard and 10+ touchdown season for Jamaal Williams? Jason Lieser (Sun-Times) name-checks Ian Wheeler, Brittain Brown, and Royce Freeman as Bears backs who will get a shot to audition for a roster spot. You can’t tell me preseason games are meaningless when jobs are on the line. Chicago’s defense will be tested for as long as the Chiefs keep the starters in the game. Taking on quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce, and others is already a daunting task. But Scott Bair (Marquee) reminds us that the Bears will do so tonight while not being at full strength. Perhaps someone makes a play that makes them stand out in the crowd. It’s not as if Mahomes doesn’t make risky throws. So if he does wing it up there, I hope there is a Bears defender who wants to put a splash play on tape. Even though this is an exhibition game that means nothing in the standings, I hate that the Bears’ defense is going out there without cornerback Jaylon Johnson. I miss watching him lock down opposing WR1s. The Miami Dolphins are sullying their reputation with their continued complaints about how the Bears were in their joint practice sessions:

Are they sullying their reputations, or are the Dolphins just living up to the “soft” label that has followed them for the last few years? Between the no-shows in cold-weather games, dismissing Vic Fangio and ethering him on the way out the door (only to see him win a Super Bowl as a defensive coordinator a year later), and now this … it’s not a great look. So you want to get into sports media? Well, I feel as if this quote from FOX broadcaster (and former Bears tight end) Greg Olsen captures the experience:

“You know, the football part, I felt like I always understood and I saw and I really enjoy talking the game and formulating different storylines to present to the viewer, and letting them kind of unravel in real time during the broadcast. The TV part is the part I think all of us have to learn, right? You have to learn how to go in and out of commercial breaks. You have to learn how to talk to the truck… I’m still learning some of the nuance, the terminology, where all the cameras are, and I’ve gotten a lot better now, going into my fifth year.

“It’s very interesting. The football part, I feel like that’s the easy part. Making that fit into a three-hour live broadcast, talk in segments, talk in soundbites, not talking over your play-by-play, commercial breaks, ad reads.”

Some former players who go to the broadcast booth coast on their name, and it shows up to fans when they tune in on game days. So it is refreshing to read about how Olsen is continuing to hone his craft with hard work. Speaking of FOX broadcasters, The Athletic reports Tom Brady and the rest of the A-Team will be at Soldier Field in Chicago for the Bears’ Week 3 showdown against the Dallas Cowboys. That means Ben Johnson vs. Matt Eberflus is going on a national stage. I need Ben’s offense to run Eberflus’ defense out of town the way I need oxygen to breathe. The Minnesota Vikings could be turning to an old friend as they seek help at wide receiver:

Vikings have inquired about trading for Panthers WR Adam Thielen, per league sources. With WR Jordan Addison serving a three-game suspension and Jalen Nailor dealing with a hand injury, Thielen could wind up starting opening night for the Vikings if they can complete the trade. pic.twitter.com/ep7lrSbYo2
