AUSTIN (Nexstar) -- Gov. Greg Abbott is calling on lawmakers to pass more legislation during the ongoing Special Session. Wednesday evening, he announced that he added three items to the Special Session #2 agenda.
A news release from the Governor's office outlined the additional items, which he called "important issues that will benefit Texas."
Legislation to impose penalties or punishments for legislators who willfully absent themselves during a session Legislation to authorize a person to purchase Ivermectin at a pharmacy Legislation relating to a groundwater study of East Texas aquifers by the Texas Water Development Board prior to the issuance of permits or permit amendments by certain groundwater conservation districtsThe push for penalties on legislators comes after more than 50 House Democrats left the state to temporarily block a bill to create new voting districts to boost Republican congressional candidates. The quorum break went against Texas House rules, but did not violate state law.
State Rep. Joanne Schofner, R-Nacogdoches, has proposed a bill to give patients easier access to Ivermectin. The drug, which is used for treating parasitic infections in animals, gained attention when people began using it to treat symptoms of COVID-19. Some people believe the drug can be used to treat other conditions, including cancer. Current research from the CDC does not support claims that the drug is effective to treat COVID-19 or cancer.
In July, State Rep. Cody Harris, R-Palestine led a public hearing at the Capitol to examine the impact of plans to pump water out of the Carrizo Wilcox aquifer in east Texas. The proposals would send that water to other parts of the state. In his news release, Gov. Abbott wrote, "we need to ensure appropriate studies are conducted to protect the health of East Texas aquifers."
Special Session #2 started on August 15, and runs for 30 days.
