Andy Murray finally ended his Grand Slam hoodoo at the US Open in 2012, but there was one moment in the celebrations that particularly caught people’s attention.
The Brit had lost in four finals prior to the run to his maiden title at Flushing Meadow, the most heart-breaking of which came just a few weeks earlier at Wimbledon.
Murray panicked about his watch – but was later seen wearing it as he lifted the trophyIt was a gruelling five-set encounter with Novak Djokovic that lasted nearly five hours and tied the record for joint-longest US Open final in history.
Murray was exhausted as he became the first British man to win a Grand Slam title since Fred Perry in 1936.
He embraced Novak Djokovic at the net before tearing off his sweatbands and raising his arms aloft.
However, panic quickly set across Murray’s face as he realised he could not find his watch.
His $2,000 Rado watch had gone missing, one of Murray’s biggest sponsors at the time.
“I don’t have my watch.” Turning to his team, Murray exclaimed.
“I don’t have it. I don’t have it. Have you got my watch? I don’t have it.”
Eventually his girlfriend Kim Sears, who later went on to become his wife, produced a watch from somewhere so he could wear it during the trophy presentation and was able to keep his sponsors happy.
Murray’s Grand Slam success
It proved to be a pivotal moment for Murray in his career as he went on to win Wimbledon the following year and then again in 2016.
“That was a huge moment for me,” Murray later said. “I’d been put under a lot of pressure to try and achieve that.
Murray beat Djokovic in the US Open final to win his first Grand SlamGetty“A lot of what I’d achieved in my career up to that point felt, to me anyway, kind of irrelevant because of the questions I’d continued to get asked about winning Slams.
“Am I good enough? Am I fit enough? Am I mentally strong enough? Lots and lots of questions over a period of time.
“And it was nice to finally be able to move on from that because it’s not particularly helpful, and also the players I was competing against – maybe at the time they were all great players but not how everyone is seeing them now.
“They’re pretty much being seen as the three best tennis players of all time, certainly on the men’s side. It wasn’t easy to win Slams in this era. I was aware of that. But I don’t think everyone else was.”
That victory sealed his status as one of tennis’ big four.
He managed three Grand Slam titles in the greatest era of tennis where Roger Federer (20), Rafael Nadal (22), and Novak Djokovic (25) amassed 67 major championships between them.
Murray was part of the famous Big Four alongside Federer, Djokovic, and NadalAFP“I remember how I felt before the match,” continued Murray. “I remember being in the locker room on my own and feeling unbelievably nervous and feeling pretty lonely and kind of feeling a lot of pressure.
“I remember after the match going back on to the court before I left the venue. I just wanted to be out there on my own.
“I was very proud of myself. I didn’t feel like going wild and celebrating and that sort of stuff. I just felt quite relaxed and it was just such a big relief to get over that line.”
Andy Murray retired in 2024 after an incredible career that was blighted by a hip injury over the later years.
He was given an emotional send off at Wimbledon as he played there for the final time before signing off with an epic run at the Olympics.
