As the Blackhawks begin celebrating their Centennial this coming season, we’ve been sharing some of the franchise leaders and award winners from throughout the history of the franchise. Today, we’ll look at the Blackhawks defensemen who took home that position’s top award.
Over the past few weeks as we’ve discussed the first century of Chicago Blackhawks hockey, we’ve looked at:
Franchise Rookie Records Calder Trophy Winners Four-Goal Periods for Blackhawks Skaters Hart Trophy Winners Franchise Goalie Records Vezina Trophy, Jennings Trophy WinnersNow, let’s turn our attention to the Norris Trophy. The Norris Trophy was first presented in 1954 “to the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position.” While I might argue the “defense” part of the position may have been somewhat taken for granted over the past couple decades (cough, Erik Karlsson, cough), this award is still the most prestigious a defenseman can win for his regular season performance.
The Norris Trophy has been awarded to a Blackhawks defenseman eight times, but only four players have won the award. The first three have already been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and the fourth will be there soon.
