Bears Player Grades: Caleb Williams and The Starters Impress In Preseason Debut ...Middle East

Let the overreacting begin!

The Chicago Bears are still playing their second preseason game, but we got our first look at most of the starters in action against the Buffalo Bills at Soldier Field. There is no sense in making more out of this game than it was – a warmup consisting of a few series to get the starters some game reps. Having said that, we got a look at Caleb Williams and company, so it can’t hurt to talk about what we saw.

Bears Offense

QB Caleb Williams | A

I will not get too excited. I will not get too excited. Ok, seriously, it was only two drives in the preseason, but Caleb looked about as comfortable and prepared as he possibly could. His timing was on point, he was hitting his receivers in stride, and his touchdown pass to Olamide Zaccheaus was a dart. Again, there’s no use in getting overexcited about a practice game, but Caleb looked great in his two series.

RB Deion Hankins | C

Hankins had running back duty tonight with just about every other back on the roster seemingly unavailable, and then even he went down with what looked like an ankle injury. Hankins was fine. Not much to judge.

WR DJ Moore | B

Two catches for sixteen yards, and one of those grabs came on a nicely run quick out on third down to pick up the first.

WR Rome Odunze | D

No catches for Rome, but he dropped a very catchable ball on third and five to end the second and final drive for the starters.

WR Olamide Zaccheaus | A

We’ve been hearing all camp about the catch-and-run ability of Zaccheaus, and it was on full display on his touchdown grab. He caught a really nice ball from Caleb through a window and took it to the house after weaving through the Bills’ defense.

BOOM! Caleb Williams Throws a TD Pass on His First Preseason Drive

TE Cole Kmet | A

One catch for 29 yards. A pretty efficient day for Cole!

TE Colston Loveland | A

The two-tight-end system seemed to work out just fine in this one. Loveland made a pair of grabs, including a nice snag on a slightly high ball from Caleb Williams, to pick up a first down.

Offensive Line | C

Pass pro was decent, but run blocking felt pretty meh, and on Caleb Williams’ third down conversion to DJ Moore, Braxton Jones got beat BADLY on an inside move. If he can’t move on that ankle, he just can’t really play.

Bears Defense | A

The whole defense just gets an A! The first unit had just one series, and they didn’t give the Josh Allen-less Bills’ offense much of anything.
