This unrelenting debate in the WNBA will never end.
The face of the WNBA has been an ongoing topic of discussion, and it has intensified since the arrival of Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese.
Angel Reese signature shoe has been released@ReebokSome believe accolades and pedigree determine whether you are the face of the league, while others argue it’s the brand and popularity which make you number one.
When it comes to the former stance, WNBA champions and veterans like A’ja Wilson or Breanna Stewart come to mind.
And of course, when it comes to the latter, it’s the young stars like Clark and Reese who fit the bill.
However, for one decorated NBA champion who knows a thing or two about playing with superstars, the face of the WNBA is a clear one.
NBA champion has a clear opinion
Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green was once asked on the social media app Threads who is the face of the WNBA.
The four-time NBA champion gave an emphatic response by saying, “Caitlin Clark. No question”.
This is not the first time Green has hailed Clark.
When the Indiana Fever star was controversially left out of Team USA’s Olympic team in 2024, the power forward was quick to criticise the decision.
“I think Caitlin Clark should have been on the USA Team. It’s great for the brand. We talk brand any other time, let’s not act like it doesn’t matter now,” he said.
“The W is there, so it must be about spreading this globally, and she’s the biggest global star in women’s basketball.
There has been no movement on a Clark signature shoeGetty Clark and Reese are two of the WNBA’s biggest starstalksport“Just from a pure branding and marketing standpoint, Caitlin’s the biggest.”
Despite Clark’s brand being unquestionably enormous, she has yet to be honoured with a feat that fellow WNBA star Reese has just achieved.
Angel Reese’s signature shoe has been revealed
The Sky forward is just in her sophomore WNBA season, but has already had a signature shoe announced.
The ‘Angel Reese 1’ is being released in stores on September 18.
Reese has been the face of Reebok basketball ever since the company, which was once led by Shaquille O’Neal, returned to basketball two years ago.
The 23-year-old’s multi-million dollar deal with Reebok is part of her huge sponsorship empire that includes the likes of McDonald’s, Hershey, Amazon, Beats by Dre, PlayStation and Cash App.
Where is Caitlin Clark’s signature shoe?
While Nike have said Clark will eventually get one, there has been no update or announcement since.
The delay on Clark’s signature shoe has even led to three-time WNBA champion Diana Taurasi pleading with the shoe-giant to reward the Fever star with a pair of kicks.
“Caitlin, of course,” Taurasi said when asked who should get the next shoe.
“I mean, I know she has some (player exclusives), little colorways, but you can do that on Nike ID. I mean the next Caitlin shoe should be the next one, and you know my kids will be wearing it.”
So while many would agree with Green’s take that Clark is the face of the WNBA, it is Reese’s brand that seems to be everywhere.
