ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The city of Rochester is planning to develop a portion of Baden Park into a space honoring a civil rights icon.
This project aims to honor the city’s civil rights history with the creation of the Minister Franklin D. Florence Civil Rights Heritage Park and serve as an educational landmark, inspiring future generations with stories of resilience and activism.
“I think that’s a good idea,” Rochester Native Jalen Rump said. “The city has lost a lot of life in it as far as this area, and it will bring back a lot of life and could at least put a presence back in the city.”
Another resident expressed hope that the park will focus on younger generations.
“I say that if they do it, man, just make sure you really think about more of the kids, man,” Baden Park visitor Santiago Alfonso said. “They need more.”
The city is seeking community input through a survey available on its website. The survey allows residents to contribute ideas to honor Minister Franklin D. Florence, known for challenging discriminatory hiring practices in Rochester.
“I think honoring somebody like that is huge,” Jalen Rump said. “Bringing it back to the city, like I said, it’s putting life in the area. And being around, especially being a native like me, you know what it’s like to be around here. It’s dead.”
Feedback from the survey will help guide the city’s decisions in revitalizing the area while continuing to work on the design of the park. Development of the master plan with community input is ongoing.
