1990 Southern Rock Ballad, Written by a 17-Year-Old on a 'Weird' Guitar, Remains a Haunting Classic 36 Years Later ...Saudi Arabia

Not only did Shake Your Money Maker sell over 5 million copies, but two of the album's singles, "Hard to Handle" and "She Talks to Angels," went all the way to #1 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. What makes that achievement all the more impressive is the fact that founding members (and brothers) Chris and Rich Robinson were barely more than kids at the time: Rich was just 19 years old when Shake Your Money Maker was released, and frontman Chris was a mere lad of 23.

As Rich recalled in an interview with Premier Guitar, he was "still in high school" at the time, and a "guy named James Hall," who was a friend of his older brother, showed him how to play an Open E chord on the guitar.

"I got this weird guitar and I wrote the basics of 'She Talks to Angels' on it and I quickly sold that guitar because it was so weird and kind of unusable."

"'She Talks to Angels' is a funny song in that so many people resonate with it," Chris (who wrote the lyrics) said in an interview with Songfacts.

Even though Chris and Rich were young and relatively inexperienced when they wrote some of their biggest hits, Chris went on to say that some things about the creative process didn't change over the years.

As for fans of the Black Crowes, they can go back to the time and feeling when "She Talks to Angels" came out anytime, and they often do: At the time of this writing, the song has over 180 million streams on Spotify alone.
