As music legend has it, "Cherry Pie" was written in such a hurry that frontman Jani Lane scrawled the lyrics on an empty pizza box in a friend's kitchen, per The Daily Sling, after Columbia Records president Don Ienner demanded a "monster single" for Warrant's second album.
Unfortunately, "Cherry Pie" was almost as much of a curse as it was a blessing for the band. Lane might have meant the lyrics to be over-the-top, but the sarcasm was lost on some people...especially after the cartoonish-ly sexist video came out, featuring Lane's future wife Bobbie Brown in some compromising positions with an actual cherry pie.
"It was a parody. So I guess if people don't get that it's a parody, I don't know, is that on me or on them?" Stein asked with a laugh.
Either way, Lane felt that all the "Cherry Pie" hype overshadowed the band's other, perhaps more nuanced, tunes. On an episode of VH1's HEAVY: The Story of Metal, Lane expressed extreme regret over writing the song, though he later clarified those comments.
"You know, push that interview to the side, I'm happy as a clam to have written a song that is still being played and still dug by so many people," Lane added. "It's hard enough to write a song, let alone one that sticks around."
