Cubs vs Blue Jays — I genuinely cannot remember the last time the Cubs came back in a game they were down any meaningful amount. And while that’s not, itself, necessarily predictive of anything meaningful, it certainly underscores the biggest issue of the moment: A total and complete lack of offensive production.
For the season, of course, the Cubs still boast one of the top overall offensive teams (113 wRC+ and 599 runs scored are both fourth best in MLB), but it’s just a very different story after the All-Star break:
87 runs scored (t-28th in MLB) 101 wRC+ (18th in MLB)And I bring all this up because the team they’re set to face this week in Toronto has been equally good offensively as the Cubs all year, but they’ve also been THE best in the second half of the season:
143 Runs scored (best in MLB) 149 wRC+ (best in MLB) 36 HRs (t-4th best in MLB)And while the Cubs starting pitchers have been equally impressive, relatively speaking, since the start of July (2.87 ERA, 1st in MLB), the Blue Jays will pose a particular challenge this week. I guess we just have to hope the version of Ben Brown we’ve seen over his last two appearances can keep it up. Ditto Cade Horton and his scoreless streak.
On the flip side, the Blue Jays are starting three big-time pitchers this weekend: Jose Berrios, Kevin Gausman, and Max Scherzer. And I’m sorry to inform you that only Berrios is having any kind of a “bad” stretch at the moment.
Berrios last seven starts: 22 ER in 34.2 IP (5.71 ERA) Gausman last eight starts: 14 ER in 49.2 IP (2.54 ERA) Scherzer last seven starts: 17ER in 39.0 IP (3.92 ERA)Are these guys beatable? Yeah, sure. But facing three good starters and the hottest offense in baseball on the road when your offense is absolutely nonexistent just doesn’t inspire much confidence.
