Cubs Prospects Report .. August 11, 2025: Long & Caissie Stand Out In Iowa Loss ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Apologies for the absence, instead of keeping up with Cubs minor league ball over the past few weeks, I took some time off to bounce around Greece and Italy for my honeymoon. But now that I’m back from Santorini in Florence, it’s time to focus on Des Moines and South Bend! Let’s recap Sunday’s action that saw Iowa drop a close one, Knoxville and South Bend pick up wins, and Myrtle Beach get rained out.

Cubs Prospects Report | August 11, 2025

Triple-A Iowa Cubs

Iowa collected eight hits on the afternoon, but those eight hits came from just four individuals. Jonathan Long had the standout performance for the Cubs. He went 3-4 with a triple and a home run on the afternoon. Long got the Cubs on the board first. A one-out triple in the fourth inning got him into scoring position, then he scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, Long blasted a solo shot to tie the game up at 2. Unfortunately, that was it for the Cubs’ scoring.

While Owen Caissie didn’t score or drive in a run, he did reach base three times as well in this matchup, going 1-2 with a pair of walks. Will we be seeing him with the big club anytime soon, given their offensive struggles?

Notable Performances

Jonathan Long | 3-4, HR, 2 R, 3B Owen Caissie | 1-2, 2 BB Nicky Lopez | 2-4, 2B

FINAL: Saints 3, Cubs 2 | Box Score

Double-A Knoxville Smokies

After allowing a first-inning home run, Tyler Schlaffer settled down and was lights out for Knoxville. Overall, he went six innings and allowed just those two runs. From the second inning on, he allowed just one hit and didn’t issue a walk. While the offense wasn’t great for Knoxville, it did enough to get Schlaffer the win. In the third inning, trailing 2-0, Andy Garriola finally got the Smokies on the board with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Following the RBI single, Jefferson Rojas and Brett Bateman each brought in runs after getting plunked by pitches, putting Knoxville in front 3-2. The Smokies’ bullpen was lights out after that, and Knoxville closed out the series with a 3-2 win.

Notable Performances

Tyler Schlaffer | 6.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 6 K, BB Brett Bateman | 1-2, RBI, SB Andy Garriola | 1-4, R, RBI

FINAL: Smokies 3, Shuckers 2 | Box Score

High-A South Bend Cubs

Christian Hernandez was the player of the game for South Bend at the plate, while Yenrri Rojas was outstanding on the mound. Hernandez went 3-4 with a home run and a pair of RBI. His homer came in the fifth inning with South Bend already up 2-0 and extended the cushion to four runs.

On the mound, Rojas gave the Cubs five really good innings. He didn’t allow a run, surrendered just three hits, struck out six, and didn’t issue a walk. He exited after those five innings of work with a 4-0 lead and ended up earning the win. The TinCaps did cut the lead in half in the seventh with a two-run blast, but that was as close as they’d get, and South Bend took home the 4-2 win.

Notable Performances

Edgar Alvarez | 4-5, 2 R, RBI Ariel Armas | 2-5, R, 3 RBI, 2 2B Rafel Morel | 2-3, R, 3 RBI, 2 2B, BB

FINAL: Cubs 4, TinCaps 2 | Box Score
