A man opened fire outside the headquarters of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta on Friday, leaving bullet marks in windows across the sprawling campus and killing a police officer before he was found dead in a nearby building, authorities said.
The attack, which unfolded near the neighboring Emory University campus, prompted a massive law enforcement response to one of the nation’s most prominent public health institutions, but no one else was reported to be injured.
DeKalb County police officer David Rose, 33, was killed while responding to the shooting, the police department said. Rose, a father of two with a third on the way, had been with the police department since September.
“He was committed to serving the community,” Interim Police Chief Greg Padrick said in a statement. “At this time we’re asking for the community’s prayers for his family, his friends, his loved ones and the entire DeKalb County Police Department family.”
At least four CDC buildings were hit, Director Susan Monarez said in a post on X. Images shared by employees showed multiple agency buildings with bullet-pocked windows, underscoring the breadth of the damage to a site where thousands of scientists and staff work on critical disease research.
Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said 911 calls about an active shooter came in around 4:50 p.m. for 1600 Clifton Road, immediately in front of the CDC campus. Emory University sent out an active shooting alert to its Atlanta campus, then lifted it about an hour and a half later.
When officers responded to the scene, Schierbaum said they found Rose critically injured. Rose later died of his injuries from a gunshot wound, Padrick said.
Schierbaum said officers heard gunfire inside a CVS at the intersection, and went inside the building to try to locate the shooter.
The gunman was found on the second floor of a building across the street from the CDC campus and died at the scene, Schierbaum said. He added that “we do not know at this time whether that was from officers or if it was self-inflicted.”
The gunman’s motive is still unknown this early in the investigation, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said.
There were 92 children at a daycare on the CDC campus in Atlanta when the shooting took place nearby, Dickens said.
Staff at a deli near campus locked the doors and hunkered down inside. Brandy Giraldo, The General Muir’s chief operating officer, said staffers inside heard a string of gunshots.
“It sounded like fireworks going off, one right after the other,” she said.
Monarez said Monday would be a remote workday for all CDC employees so the agency could conduct a security assessment before workers return to their offices. In her X post, she called the shooting an “attack on our Roybal Campus,” referring to the office complex.
“As we navigate the aftermath of this event, we want to express our eternal gratitude to law enforcement personnel who were injured and share our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the Dekalb County Police Officer who was killed in the line of duty,” she wrote in an email sent to employees.
The CDC and Emory’s main campus are surrounded by affluent wooded neighborhoods in northeast Atlanta. All three institutions line up along Clifton Road. The area is hard to access, and notoriously traffic-choked, but on Friday few cars were in evidence as a warning siren blared.
“Twice this week, deranged criminals have targeted innocent Georgians,” Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said on X.
He thanked the “brave first responders” who “rushed toward the danger to subdue the shooter and save lives, reminding us of just how crucial they are.”
“We ask that you join us in holding them in our prayers, along with those harmed this evening near the CDC Center,” he said.
An active-duty soldier opened fire at an Army post in Georgia on Wednesday, injuring five service members before he was subdued by witnesses and taken into custody, a military official said.
