The leaves may not have started their annual technicolor display before inevitably making their final descent down from the canopy above, but that hasn’t stopped us from getting into the spirit early in preparation for the upcoming season. As excited as we are for cozy season, though, we might want to take a beat before stocking our freezer with pecans to make Grandma’s famous pecan pie.
Due to a recent recall affecting 32,670 pounds of pecans, the Southern fried staple might be off the table this year, but we’re sure grandma will totally understand. Texas-based Navarro Pecan Holdings, LLC, issued the voluntary recall after inspectors found evidence of possible salmonella contamination in batches of various pecan products distributed to five states, including Texas, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and New Jersey.
The affected products were also distributed internationally to Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates. Because of the widespread distribution, including bulk shipments to bakeries, food manufacturers, and commercial kitchens, the potential for a public health crisis is incredibly high. In other words, you may want to practice making one of Grandma’s other delicious pies instead.
Why Salmonella Poisoning is Dangerous
Currently, the recall is scheduled as Class I, which is the FDA’s most severe risk category of three. Beyond the incredibly unfortunate timing, the recall is significant because Class I risk classifications are reserved for situations where there is a "reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."
What to Do With Items Affected by the Recent Pecan Recall
So far, no illnesses have been reported as a result of the recall, but it’s still best to exercise caution just to be safe. All customers, including bakeries, food manufacturers, and commercial kitchens, are advised to dispose of any affected pecans or return them to the retailer if possible. It’s also recommended to sanitize any surfaces that may have come in contact with the impacted product.
