Enhanced Box Score: Reds 5, Cubs 1 – August 5, 2025 ...Middle East

It’s still the offense that keeps putting the bullpen in these ugly spots. They have to be too perfect. It’s an impossible ask.

None of that lets Andrew Kittredge entirely off the hook for a miserable appearance tonight, but it does underscore how the relievers right now can’t get away with ANYTHING or else the game will be a loss. The starting pitchers can be great, and that matters a lot. But if the bats aren’t ever doing anything explosive (hell, I’d settle for tepid lately!), then it doesn’t matter what the starting pitchers do. Requiring three or four innings of scoreless relief EVERY single night is not a great idea.

About the offense. I could sum it up in the first inning. The first two batters reached ahead of Kyle Tucker and Pete Crow-Armstrong, and that’s supposed to be a dream scenario. But right now, it’s ROUGH. BOTH of Tucker and PCA struck out ugly. (Willi Castro completed the trifecta, but I won’t lump him in right now for a variety of reasons.)

That was the feel all night.

Shōta Imanaga is obviously the Ankin Law “Making It Personal” Player of the Game if you have to pick a Cubs player, because he was fantastic. Unfortunately for him and the Cubs, pitchers don’t bat anymore.
