D-backs notes: Gabriel Moreno ramping up, Kevin Ginkel seeks 2nd opinion ...Middle East

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno grabbed a bat and started taking swings off a tee and soft toss Tuesday as he works back from the injured list.

Moreno has been on the IL for nearly two months with a fractured right index finger, but he is finally asymptomatic. After a clean CT scan, Moreno has begun ramping up to full baseball activities.

“ He got a bat in his hand and started swinging and was, from what I was told, pain free,” manager Torey Lovullo said pregame on Tuesday. “That’s a big landmark for him.”

Arizona has toggled between James McCann and Jose Herrera behind the plate in Moreno’s absence, while Adrian Del Castillo is a third catcher on the roster who has acted as a designated hitter.

Moreno is a major piece of the puzzle for Arizona, and he was playing quite well before a ball skipped off the dirt and hit his bare hand during a rainy inning in Cincinnati. He had been hitting .300 over his last 28 games while playing typically excellent defense.

His exact timeline is still to be determined, but he has been able to catch and maintain cardio while waiting for his hand to heal.

Kevin Ginkel seeking 2nd opinion

Relief pitcher Kevin Ginkel landed on the injured list on Monday with a right shoulder sprain, and Lovullo said he is seeking a second opinion from Dr. Keith Meister, who performed elbow surgery on Justin Martinez earlier this summer.

Lovullo said there is concern that Kevin Ginkel could miss the rest of the season.

“I don’t think much will change as far as that diagnosis,” Lovullo said. “It’s gonna be a conservative recovery for him. It’s just a matter of what does that recovery look like and how long. I think that’s what we’re trying to determine right now.”

Lovullo said Ginkel is not experiencing discomfort in his elbow, that the pain is isolated in his shoulder.

Ginkel last pitched on Saturday, but he had not been 100% previously. Lovullo said Ginkel felt great that day, but the inning of work “ got to be too much for him.”

Ginkel had pitched to a 1.98 ERA over his last 14 appearances before hitting the IL. Without Ginkel available, among many other trusted relievers, the Diamondbacks will have to give younger pitchers opportunities in high leverage.

Rookies Andrew Hoffmann and Kyle Backhus locked down Monday’s win over San Diego, with Backhus picking up his first career save. Backhus got to keep the ball afterward, he said.

Additional Diamondbacks injury updates

– Reliever Ryan Thompson (scapular strain) has thrown out to 120 feet and will throw a short box on Friday. A short box is a version of a bullpen where a pitcher throws off the mound but to a closer target.

– First baseman Pavin Smith (oblique strain) and infielder Ildemaro Vargas (broken foot) took at-bats in live batting practice on Tuesday and will play a game on Thursday at Salt River Fields.

– Shortstop Jordan Lawlar (hamstring strain), also took live BP and will get in a game on Thursday.

– Reliever Drey Jameson is still not throwing, as right elbow discomfort from a loose body continues to keep him off the mound. He has not thrown in an affiliated game since May 18, and his last appearance came in a complex league game on June 27.

“The things I’m hearing and overhearing are things that are a little bit different from what I’m used to,” Lovullo said of Jameson’s situation.

– Pitcher Cristian Mena is throwing out to 75 feet.

Geraldo Perdomo wins Arizona’s Heart and Hustle Award

Each year, the Major League Baseball Players Association honors one player on each team with the Heart and Hustle Award. The hardware is given to players who “exemplify a true passion for the game and who best embody the values, spirit and tradition of the game.” A committee of alumni pick the selectees, and a league-wide winner will be announced after the season.

Geraldo Perdomo was named Arizona’s Heart and Hustle Award winner for the 2025 season.

The most recent Diamondbacks winners entering this year were Christian Walker (2024), Corbin Carroll (2023), Daulton Varsho (2022) and Eduardo Escobar (2021).

Perdomo is having his best year offensively, setting career highs with 11 home runs, 23 doubles, 75 RBIs, 65 walks and 17 stolen bases with just under two months left to play. He is neck-and-neck with Philadelphia’s Trea Turner and Cincinnati’s Elly De La Cruz for the NL-lead in fWAR with 4.0 each.

Diamondbacks name monthly minor league award winners

The Diamondbacks named their organization’s minor league player and pitcher of the month for July on Tuesday, honoring High-A Hillsboro catcher Kenny Castillo and Double-A Amarillo right-handed pitcher Jose Cabrera.

Cabrera became a name to watch coming into spring training with how well he pitched for Hillsboro last year. After a couple tough games in June, the 23-year-old got on a run in July with a 2.56 ERA in 31.2 innings over six starts (four quality).

Castillo, 21, reached base safely in all 14 of his starts in July, hitting .354 across the month.

Arizona highlighted a position player and pitcher from each affiliate. First baseman Tristin English and pitcher Dylan Ray earned the nod for Triple-A Reno.
