Whether it’s with his comedy, his magic or his ventriloquist acts, Andy Gross knows how to get laughs out of an audience. It’s what he has done for nearly 40 years across the country.
He has been on his current tour, “Are You Kidding Me?,” for more than a year, and he’s bringing it to downtown Greeley next week.
Gross takes the stage at 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at the Moxi Theater, 802 9th St. Gross said he has heard about the comedic talent Moxi owner Ely Corliss has booked in the past few years, and Gross is ready to bring his talents to the intimate setting — the kind he cut his comedic chops at in the early ’90s in California.
“I like intimate venues. It’s really nice,” Gross said. “You’re up close to the people. You can connect with them. There’s a much better connection between you and the audience. At the end of the night, you almost become friends with every person in the venue.”
Gross set out to entertain people from an early age, but the focus hasn’t always been comedy and magic. In the early ’80s, Gross was a 15-year-old living in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. Racquetball was popular across the country, he said, and St. Louis was the epicenter.
Some of the best players came out of his hometown, himself included, he said. At that time, Gross was the youngest professional racquetball player in the country, he added.
Gross amassed racquetball sponsors as he played the sport across the country and led a comfortable life. At 25, he moved to Los Angeles in the early ’90s. It was there that life played a joke on him. He said the sport fizzled out across the country, so he began searching for his next move.
With no college education — since he focused on racquetball — he turned to his magic and ventriloquist act he developed when he was young.
He took those acts to famed Los Angeles clubs such as The Laugh Factory, The Comedy Store and others, where he saw Adam Sandler, Jay Leno and other comedy legends perform. He got a lukewarm response from club owners, who told him he needed comedy in his act. He took their advice and never looked back.
Since then, Gross has toured across the country and performed in venues big and small. His magic trick and prank called “Magician cut in half” has more than 8 million views on YouTube. In it, Gross walks around parks and other public places, carrying the lower half of his body around to see what reactions he gets from random people.
Amazon Prime streams his latest show, “Are You Kidding Me?” The 40-minute show features his magic, comedy and lots of pranks.
