With there being little/no hockey happening in August, and the Blackhawks celebrating their centennial season in the coming year, we’re going to spend some time this month looking back at the history of the franchise. Today we’ll start the month off looking at the best individual seasons Blackhawks rookies have achieved.
As more young players begin making their way to the NHL for the Blackhawks in the coming years, it would be fun if someone challenged some of the all-time best numbers put up by rookies for the franchise. But… that might be tough. The Blackhawks have had some of the best rookie seasons in NHL history.
In the history of the National Hockey League, a rookie has scored at least 40 goals only 16 times. Two of those seasons have come from players who are still currently active (Alex Ovechkin and Auston Matthews).
Two Blackhawks rookies are among those 16 seasons in the history of the league in which a rookie has scored 40 goals.
Steve Larmer — 43 — 1982-83 Darryl Sutter — 40 — 1980-81Larmer’s 43 goals are tied with Mario Lemieux for the tenth-most from a rookie in NHL history. Teemu Selanne’s 76 goals during the 1992-93 season is still the gold standard for a first-year player.
In the history of the NHL, a rookie has been credited with at least 50 assists only 24 times. Only one Blackhawks rookie has reached that benchmark.
Patrick Kane — 51 — 2007-08Only nine players in the history of the NHL have recorded at least three assists in their NHL debut. Denis Savard is the only Blackhawks rookie to record three helpers in his first career NHL game (Oct. 9, 1980).
And, in the history of the NHL, only 13 rookies have recorded at least 90 points in their first season in the league. One of those is a Blackhawks forward — whose number should have been retired by the organization decades ago.
