Sixers Superstars Destroy Bulls on ‘Rocky Night’ in Philly, 126-107 ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Caleb Wilson finessed his 3-point shooting, Norman Powell took double-digit free throws again (although his field goal shooting remained inefficient), and Josh Giddey’s passing looked respectable once again for our Chicago Bulls on the road against the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night.

But it made no difference against a much, much more talented Philadelphia squad on “Rocky Night.” The Sixers improved to a 7-1 start on the 2026-27 season, while dropping Chicago to 1-6.

All five Philadelphia starters scored 15 or more points, while the Sixers’ two best players (small forward Jaylen Brown and point guard Tyrese Maxey) notched 20-plus point double-doubles. Second-year shooting guard VJ Edgecombe, who has become the club’s fifth option thanks to the additions of Brown and James, showed off some impressive speed and strength.

Aging All-Stars Joel Embiid (plantar fasciitis) and LeBron James (sciatica) battled through injuries to help put their own stamps on the game. Even playing on a minutes restriction, Embiid finished with 15 points and eight rebounds in a shade under 25 minutes.

With Scott Williams and Adam Amin on the horn on “Rocky Night,” the Bulls’ 126-107 blowout felt a bit less painful. Williams and Bill Wennington have thus far emerged as two of this writer’s favorite color commentators this season, as Chicago Sports Network seeks a permanent replacement for the late great Stacey King.

Bulls Once Again Collapse in Second Half to a Much Better Team

Just 2:43 into the game, with the Sixers having run out to six fast-break scores, head coach Tiago Splitter made a change.

Although only Norman Powell and Caleb Wilson had generated much of anything offensively, Splitter yanked Powell from his lineup in favor of Isaac Okoro — Chicago’s best perimeter defender.

Again, though, Wilson at least looked good on offense. Fresh off notching a career-best six triples against the Boston Celtics in a losing effort Friday, the Rookie of the Year contender was unafraid to let it fly from distance:

Chicago actually managed to more or less keep pace with the Sixers early on. A Buddy Hield triple gave the Bulls a temporary lead, 41-40, midway through the second period. The Sixers eventually took a 64-59 advantage into the break.

A 26-20 Philadelphia advantage put the Sixers up by double digits heading into the fourth period. Giddey’s second triple (a pull-up over reserve forward Dean Wade) on the night briefly pulled the Bulls within single digits, 99-90, early into the fourth quarter. Giddey was 5-of-19 from long range prior to the contest. He shot a still-bad 2-of-7 from deep against Philadelphia.

The Sixers then made their inevitable run to seal the deal, going 23-12 in a six-minute stretch that ultimately put Philadelphia up by 20, 122-102, with 2:25 remaining.

The 20-point lead prompted Splitter to pull his main rotation guys for the contest’s final 2:22. Sixers head coach Nick Nurse similarly emptied his bench.

Mixed Results for the Bulls’ Young Stars

Honestly, calling them “Mixed Results” might be generous. Wilson exhibited plenty of fire and fight, Giddey was hit-or-miss, and Buzelis submitted his worst game of the season so far. And keep in mind, he’s looked relatively checked out all year and is supposedly healthy.

Despite his double-double and relatively aggressive offense, Giddey’s defense remained typically abysmal.

The 24-year-old Aussie finished with 13 on 5-of-13 shooting from the floor and 1-of-2 shooting from the foul line. He also notched 10 assists, four rebounds, two blocks, and a -15 plus-minus.

Wilson paced the Bulls in scoring (24 points) and shot attempts (17).

Most importantly, he was once again unafraid to rain down from deep. He went 4-of-9 from distance, and showed off a growing comfort for creating his own looks there.

Buzelis finished with a horrific four points on 2-of-5 shooting, three rebounds, two assists, a block, to go along with five (!) turnovers and four fouls in just 23:15 minutes of play. Isaac Okoro — Chicago’s best perimeter defender — was Splitter’s first man off the bench, earning 21:20 of action himself.

Things are getting pretty dire.

This defeat means that Chicago has now lost its six games by an average of 20.2 points.

Is it time for Splitter to demote someone to the bench in favor of a more reliable vet? BlogABull sure thinks so. Granted, Nic Claxton looks to be on track to make his Bulls debut at some point soon — which will add more defense around the cup to his first five anyway. But should Giddey or Buzelis get penalized for their miserable starts?

Chicago Bulls head coach Tiago Splitter.

Tiago Splitter Tweaks His Rotation Once Again

Beyond his (understandably) quick whistle for Buzelis — who recorded three of his fouls in the first half alone — Splitter also gave reserve center Zach Collins some run. With Philadelphia trotting out a pretty big frontcourt between Embiid, James, and backup power forward Dean Wade, the Bulls badly needed rim protection. Smith can’t provide that, and Noa Essengue is inconsistent (if intriguing!) playing defensive small-ball five.

So Collins got 10 minutes of playing time, his second-most of the year. The $17 million man is rehabbing from yet another injury, and at least can offer a bit of a threat in the paint while making the occasional outside jumper on the other end.

Still just 19 and on a rookie-scale salary, Essengue needs to earn more developmental run. He played 14 minutes and showed some offensive hustle inside. But spelling the lengthy Frenchman a bit with Collins — and even playing them together on occasion, which Splitter did on Monday — can maybe help add a little veteran professionalism to at least improve the margins of these tough blowouts.

All told, the Bulls now look like one of the worst teams in the NBA.

We always thought they were going to be in solid rebuild terrain, but these recent results (albeit mostly against great teams) have been so demoralizing that it may be time for further Splitter tinkering.

Next up, Chicago will get a road rematch against the New York Knicks on Wednesday. The reigning champs are off to a shaky 3-4 start to their season, but one of those dubs came against the Bulls last week. Chicago seems doomed to extend their losing streak to six straight games.
