SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (KRON) -- In a KRON 4 exclusive, an East Bay man is recounting a senseless shooting that took his girlfriend’s life. The couple was out walking their dogs in downtown San Leandro when a driver pulled over and opened fire, according to police.
Surveillance video recorded 41-year-old Casey Way as she walked her two dogs on the night of July 17, alongside her boyfriend, Allan Wallace.
The couple was walking on East 14th Street when a man stepped out of a black Mercedes sedan and asked for directions to San Jose. As they continued talking, the man asked Way and Wallace if they were in a gang, fired a gun, and laughed, the boyfriend told KRON4.
"He didn't try to, like, rob us or hold us up, or anything like that. He was just pulled the trigger. Hunting people down ... for what? For no reason whatsoever. And then to just laugh and walk away. That guy needs to be put in a box somewhere," Wallace said.
Homicide victim Casey Way is seen in an undated photo.Wallace described the killer as someone who was out "hunting" for victims. The San Leandro Police Department later identified the suspect as a 21-year-old San Jose man, Rohith Sunil.
After Way was shot, "she hit the ground and I turned around to try to help her. She was bleeding way too bad," Wallace recalled.
According to a police report, the gunman was wearing a black ski mask and had a tattoo under one eye. "The suspect asked (the couple) if the city they were in was Oakland, and (asked) how to get back to San Jose. The victim began to look up directions on her phone to help the suspect get back to San Jose. As she was doing so, the suspect noticed she was wearing a red bandana and began to ask her if she was in a gang," the police report states.
When the couple replied that they were not in any gangs, "the suspect laughed and racked the pistol slide," the police report writes.
San Leandro police Lt. Matthew Barajas said, "There's no indication that the victim or witness knew the suspect. We don't have any connection."
After the homicide, Sunil drove to Dublin where he followed another victim's car, according to the police report. The victim told 911 dispatchers that a sedan with no license plates was following them.
Dublin police officers found Sunil in his Mercedes with a gun and arrested him. In a police report, officers noted that Sunil had a teardrop tattooed under his eye.
Rohith Sunil is seen in a July 2025 mugshot released by the Alameda County Sheriff's Office. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged Sunil with murdering Way.
Prosecutors said the murder weapon was a stolen semi-automatic handgun. If convicted, Sunil could face 50 years to life in state prison, according to the district attorney's office.
"The amount of anger that I have towards that man, I don't even want to put that into words," Wallace told KRON4.
Wallace was not injured in the shooting, but the emotional toll has been devastating. He described Way as his best friend and his "light." Losing her left him in the dark.

"I was supposed to keep her safe, and I didn’t, and I just wish she was back here," Wallace added.
Way's body was donated to science, according to Wallace, underscoring the giving person she was in both life and death.
