MATTHEWS, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Matthews Police are searching for a man they say kidnapped his girlfriend and crashed into a Matthews Police vehicle.
Around 7 p.m. on Monday, July 28, police received a call that a man had assaulted his girlfriend and taken her against her will in his car near East Independence Boulevard and Windsor Square Drive. He was also known to carry a handgun.
Off-duty CMPD officer charged with assault and threatsSoon after, officers spotted a car that matched the vehicle description driving westbound on E. Independence Boulevard. Officers tried to run a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop.
Police say the chase ended when the driver went into a parking lot in the 7400 block of E. Independence Boulevard, had a minor crash with a Matthews Police cruiser and ran on foot into the woods behind a business. No one was injured in the crash.
The woman who was assaulted was taken to a hospital for medical care but has since been discharged.
