Ferrari snub Christian Horner in team principal decision set to boost Lewis Hamilton F1 title chances ...Middle East

Ferrari have confirmed that team principal Frederic Vasseur has signed a new multi-year contract to end speculation over his future.

The 57-year-old, whose deal was due to run out in December, has now committed to the Scuderia ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Frenchman was a key element in seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton leaving Mercedes for Ferrari this season.

However, Vasseur has been under pressure this season, with Ferrari currently the only team in F1‘s big four without a race win so far.

He has now been given the backing to lead the sport’s most famous team into the new regulations in 2026, where the Prancing Horse will be expected to challenge for the title.

Vasseur has agreed a ‘multi-year contract for the coming Formula 1 seasons’, Ferrari revealed in a statement on Thursday.

The announcement also confirms Christian Horner will not join Ferrari, following reports naming the former Red Bull boss as a possible Vasseur successor.

“I’m grateful for the trust Ferrari continues to place in me. This renewal is not just a confirmation – it’s a challenge to keep progressing, to stay focused, and to deliver,” said Vasseur.

“Over the past 30 months, we’ve laid strong foundations, and now we must build on them with consistency and determination. We know what’s expected, and we’re all fully committed to meeting those expectations and taking the next step forward together.”

Vasseur has been Ferrari team principal since 2023 and has overseen six race wins as Red Bull dominated the past two seasons.

The Tifosi have since seen McLaren emerge to become F1’s new frontrunners, with Hamilton yet to claim a podium finish in red.

Italian media reported uncertainty over Vasseur’s position as a result, but Ferrari have now eradicated any doubts over his future.

“Today we want to recognise what has been built and commit to what still needs to be achieved,” Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna said.

“It reflects our trust in Fred’s leadership – a trust rooted in shared ambition, mutual expectations and clear responsibility.

“We move forward with determination and focus, united in our pursuit of the level of performance Ferrari has to aim for.”

Vasseur’s new contract is also likely to hand a huge boost to Hamilton, who came out in support of his boss last month.

“I was just made aware of it just before I got there, so I’ve not read the stories – it’s definitely not nice to hear that there’s stories like that out there,” Hamilton said ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix.

“Firstly, I love working with Fred, Fred’s the main reason I’m in this team and got the option to be here, which I’m forever grateful for.

“We’re in this together, we’re working hard in the background, things aren’t perfect but for me, as I said, I’m here to work with the team but also with Fred.

“I want Fred here, I do believe Fred is the person to take us to the top, so that’s that. It’s nonsense, what people have written, most people don’t know what’s going on in the background, and it isn’t all easy, it’s not the smoothest sailing in the background.

“We are having to make changes and it’s a lot of work to do, and there is naturally a lot of pressure because we want to win, but that’s not any part of the discussion at the moment.”

Speaking further on the prospect of a change, Hamilton said: “Again, I don’t think that’s on the cards as far as I’m aware. That’s certainly not something that I would be supportive of.

“I mean, embedding new people, new personnel, whether it’s a driver or whether it’s engineers, or people who run an organisation, it takes time to adjust and the impact that has is significant.

“So that’s not part of the discussion. I’m here to win with Fred and he has my full support.”
