Day 2 Prelims Heat Sheet

Looking for more “fun” filled action? Well, don’t worry, you won’t have to wait long, as Day 2 Prelims of the 2025 World Aquatics Championships are soon to get underway. I put fun in quotes, because while thoroughly enjoyable, the first day of swimming had every storyline burst open. The USA’s illness situation, the did Summer McIntosh peak too early, the Pan Zhanle vs Chalmers showdown in prelims, controversial DQs, not to mention a swim-off in the very first event.

This session looks to be very much a continuation of yesterday as the stars are out in force. There are fewer events on tap this morning, but that by no means tampers down the excitement, especially as in four of the five events, the current holder of the World Record is in the field.

The session starts with one of the best rivalries over the past few years as Regan Smith will look to get that elusive win against Kaylee McKeown, as it’s been over five years since the American touched ahead of the Australian rival in an event at a Major competition. In this event, the 100 back, Smith enters as the top seed and WR holder (57.13), but McKeown is not far back with her Olympic record time of 57.33. The pair aren’t alone under the 58-second barrier as Olympic medalist Katharine Berkoff and Kylie Masse are entered with times of 57.83 and 57.94.

After six heats of women’s 100 back, we move to six heats of the men’s 100 back, where, very similarly, the top seed is the WR holder. Italy’s Thomas Ceccon, who also claimed gold in Paris, is up against foes old and new as NAB athlete Kliment Kolesnikov makes his return to the meet and Americans Tommy Janton and Jack Aikins make their debut in the event. Ceccon, who is entered in the 50 fly finals this evening, will have to moderate his efforts this morning and could likely cede the top spot in tonight’s finals to several swimmers who have been on a tear this season, including but not limited to Oliver Morgan and the World Junior record holder Miron Lifintsev.

Six seems to be a magical number this morning as the women’s 100 breaststroke also has six heats, and the number six also represents the number of World Championships in which Lilly King‘s name has appeared as the World Record holder, in some way or form (a bit of a stretch). King, the #3 seed, broke the record in 2017 and has publicly stated this will be her last competition, but does that mean it will be the last time she holds the record? Top seed Tang Qianting leads the field by nearly a second over #2 seed Angharad Evans and is .26 away from the record. Tang is the highest placed returner from Paris, where she won the silver medal, but she was nearly run down by Ireland’s Mona McSharry and faces tough competition from an on-form Kate Douglass, each of whom will flank her in the last heat.

If you guessed there would be six heats of the men’s 200 free, then you would be correct. The first and only event this morning in which the WR holder is not present, the men’s 200 free is still expected to be exciting. The Americans Luke Hobson and Gabe Jett are the 1st and 3rd seeds and will look to give Team a strong showing, but Hobson, the Olympic bronze medalist, will have a target on his back by all of his competitors, especially by those that beat him in Paris, namely the gold and silver medalists David Popovici and Matthew Richards. Don’t sleep on 100 free WR holder Pan Zhanle or 2024 World Champ Hwang Sunwoo, either, as this event is cetainly going to be fast.

If you guessed there would be six heats of the women’s 100 free, then you would be wrong. But the number six still pops up as World Record holder Katie Ledecky is on the hunt for her 6th title in this event at the World Championships. She started her run 12 years ago at the 2013 edition and only missed out in 2019 due to illness and in 2024, when she was not present. The 2019 and 2024 winner, Simona Quadarella, is in the field, but is expected to be in a tight battle with a surging Lani Pallister, Olympic silver and bronze medalist Anastasiya Kirpichnikova, and Isabel Gose. Don’t count out China’s Li Bingjie either, as she ran down both Ledecky and Pallister to win the silver last night in the 400 free.
