Day 1 Prelims Heat Sheet

Hello, Ni Hao, Selamat, Vaṇakkam, and welcome to the 2025 World Aquatics Championships held this year in Singapore. Every other sport has already started competition, if not completed, and we are just one hour away from the start of the swimming portion of the meet. While it’s been an anxious wait for us fans with several high-profile scratches and reports of sickness and injuries, the 2025 World Championships are here, and we could not ask for a better opening salvo of events.

The meet kicks off with two of the most recently broken World Record events as Summer McIntosh leads the field in the 200 IM and Lukas Martens sits at the forefront of the 400 free. Canadian superstar, McIntosh, is the strong favorite, made even more so as neither the silver nor bronze medalist from Paris are entered in the event. That said, the fight behind her is sure to be intense as the USA’s Alex Walsh will look to put her DQ from Paris behind her and hold off the likes of fellow Olympic finalist Yu Yiting and Abbie Wood.

Martens, too, is the defending Olympic Champion and enters the meet as the favorite, but will be up against a stiff test to defend his title as both the silver and bronze medalists, Elijah Winnington and Kim Woo-min, are in the field. As too is a healthy Sam Short, who is looking to rebound after a poor 2024 to reclaim this title after winning it in 2023.

From the 400 free, we transition to the 100 and 50 fly and get our first look at the sprinters. The USA’s Gretchen Walsh exploded last summer in this event, setting a new World Record, but was pipped at the line in the Olympic Final by her teammate Torri Huske. Walsh has further lowered the WR and will be looking to make sure that she finishes first in the final.

The men’s 50 fly is just as close. Swiss star Noe Ponti leads the field and will be looking to add this world title to his world title (and World Record) from the 2024 Short Course Worlds. The Long Course World record may be a step too far, but with rivals Ilya Kharun and Maxime Grousset seeded with .05 of Ponti, it could be under threat.

If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, then don’t worry, the women’s 400 free is also slated to occur. The second of three world records McIntosh recently set, the 400 free will be the Canadian’s second swim of the morning. With no semifinal, expect there to be some fast swimming, and in particular, look out for the penultimate heat where Katie Ledecky will duel with Li Bingjie to post a time that will stand up against McIntosh and the Australian hope Lani Pallister in the last heat.

The last individual event of the morning pits the 2023 World Champion, Qin Haiyang, against the 2024 Olympic Champion, Nicolo Martineghi, with Germany’s Melvin Imoudu sandwiched between the two as the #2 seed.

The morning concludes with the prelims of the women’s and men’s 4×100 free relays. The Australians set a new World Record in 2023 and backed it up with an Olympic Gold in Paris, but face a number of key absences and a resurgent American team. The Australian men, too, were victorious in Fukuoka but were upset by Team USA in Paris and will be looking to regain top honors. Each will have to contend with a strong team from China, which boasts the fastest man ever in the event, Pan Zhanle.
